About this offer:

  • What is a Series I bond? (source)
    • "A savings bond that earns interest based on combining a fixed rate and an inflation rate."
    • You may use Series I bonds to:
      • Save in a low-risk product that helps protect your savings from inflation
      • Supplement your retirement income
      • Give as a gift
      • Pay for education
      • Click here for more information about Series I Bonds
  • What interest does a Series I bond earn? (source)
    • A combination of a fixed rate that stays the same for the life of the bond and an inflation rate that is set twice a year.
    • An I bond earns interest monthly from the first day of the month in the issue date. The interest accrues (is added to the bond) until the bond reaches 30 years or you cash the bond, whichever comes first.
    • The interest is compounded semiannually. Every six months from the bond's issue date, interest the bond earned in the six previous months is added to the bond's principal value, creating a new principal value. Interest is then earned on the new principal.
    • The composite rate for I bonds issued from May 2022 through October 2022 is 9.62 percent. This rate applies for the first six months you own the bond.
  • When can I cash my I bonds?
    • After they are 12 months old.
    • If you cash an I bond before it is five years old, you will lose the last three months of interest.
    • I bonds earn interest for 30 years if you don't cash the bonds before they mature.
    • If you've been affected by a disaster, special provisions may apply.

Also they are gonna hike rates 5 to 6 pct this year (yeah i know they say 3.5 but idiot is printing money like crazy for dumb things vs focus on America...more drastic measure have to come).

Means the tbonds and cds and bank interest will be 7 to 8 pct. Also means a 12pct mortgage.

Housing will crash and so will the market. Ill be buying homes and starting CD chains and buying tbonds too. Gonna move everything out of stocks soon.

i have 50k of i bonds...started before the original thread. overpay taxes by 5k per person and you can buy paper i bond.

Financial advisors typically hate ibonds. This is because there is no money to be made for them.

This is safe, common sense investing for most people.

A lot like index funds. No sexy, but common sense and historically have been shown to be highly effective and beat out what essentially all "managers" will tell you.
Hilarious. Only time these lost money was 2016 to 2020.

That will be a perfect segway to cash these out and move to these areas. I think your numbers are high, and I don't think they reach the peak levels until end of 2023

The guy that bought the 30 yr treasury in 1984 at 12% had a VERY VERY VERY nice retirement with zero stress.

Hoping for a repeat

Curious ask to why a new thread is necessary?

I ask because now the FAQ is gone, and now there will be 100's of questions that have already been answered before by helpful members that took their time to formulate an answer.
I believe a new thread is fine since it is a new rate period starting. I would not have known.
Also, I just pasted the previous wiki into this thread's wiki. So the FAQs are here too now.

I assume it is too late for april to buy. I get this "We may have changed your purchase date(s) to the next available business day.
05-02-2022"
Now I will wait until the end of May just to get the new rate for the next 6 months.
Am I right?

We bought with 7.12% in January. Can we buy this one starting May again? Is there a maximum total value of series I bond we can own ?
I think it is a $10K per year. If you bought in Jan then you can't buy more in 2022. I bought it in December so I can buy $10K for 2022.

Yes, best to wait until the last couple days of May if you missed April. You will get the May rate until it changes in November.
