    • A combination of a fixed rate that stays the same for the life of the bond and an inflation rate that is set twice a year.
    • An I bond earns interest monthly from the first day of the month in the issue date. The interest accrues (is added to the bond) until the bond reaches 30 years or you cash the bond, whichever comes first.
    • The interest is compounded semiannually. Every six months from the bond's issue date, interest the bond earned in the six previous months is added to the bond's principal value, creating a new principal value. Interest is then earned on the new principal.
    • The composite rate for I bonds issued from May 2022 through October 2022 is 9.62 percent. This rate applies for the first six months you own the bond.
  • When can I cash my I bonds?
    • After they are 12 months old.
    • If you cash an I bond before it is five years old, you will lose the last three months of interest.
    • I bonds earn interest for 30 years if you don't cash the bonds before they mature.
    • If you've been affected by a disaster, special provisions may apply.

It will likely be 6.48% (6.48% variable rate, and we'll know the fixed rate, which has been zero for a while, tomorrow 11/1)

Ughhh, thought I had bought one for my wife on Friday but I guess the transaction didn't go through - likely it timed out and I lost track of where I was in the purchase process and didn't complete the transaction... Ah well, I did buy one to gift her (but this was intended for next year) and also picked up a couple for my kids.

What is the fixed rate based upon? Is it supposed to loosely follow the fed interest rate?

Treasury Direct website has anticipated 99.999% of the questions that keep getting asked. They have a website with answers [treasurydirect.gov].

Fixed rate

You know the fixed rate of interest that you will get for your bond when you buy the bond. The fixed rate never changes.

We announce the fixed rate every May 1 and November 1. That fixed rate then applies to all I bonds that we issue during the next 6 months.

The fixed rate is an annual rate.

Doesn't say anything about how they calculate fixed rate. It just says "we determine the fixed rate on Nov 1". If there's no logic to the fixed rate and some random dude decides it, that's fine lol. But the website says nothing of interest

So how does this work now? As my account is not yet opened since 2 weeks ago, my wife purchased $10k for her and gift me another $10k(still in the gift box). The fixed interest for that is 0%.

1. Does the 0.4% fixed rate is applicable only for new bonds that we purchase over the next 6 months or is it applicable for the bonds purchased already?
2. If my account is open now by the end of this year(before last week), I plan to the same and depending on future interest rates, we will deliver accordingly. Will the new bonds I purchase and gift, will have the 0.4% through it's life and the variable changes every 6 months?

Could you please shed more light on this? TIA.

I hope I am not wrong but:

TD gives an annualized rate that you earn for 6 months so 9.62/2 is what you'd year from the month of purchase to 5 more months. Then month 7-12 you earn the next annual rate/2 of the 6.89%.

In your case since the purchase was credited to you before Nov 1st; so you'll get the 4.81% until March 2023. Then from April 2023 to October 2023 you will earn the 3.45%. This is the minimum you have to hold before you are allowed to sell (-3 month penalty before 5 years).

As for the Gift bond delivery my plan is to see how the rates are next year or what the predictions are. If i do not plan on making any new purchase then I can deliver the Gift to the said person. If the rates are still decent then I plan on buying but not gifting until the earned rates are crappy enough to hit the $10,000 a year limit. In other words I might not deliver it next year (as you can hold for the life of the bond) and if I do deliver it will be closer to the end of October.
