I've tried just about everything, and couldn't make them not boomy, including putting it in the exact space where the R-120SW was, setting them to invert, and calibrating them.. the R-12SW was just boomy no matter the positioning or setup of it.
I'm pretty familiar with home theaters and running a large setup (7 surround, 3 subs, 4 atmos ceiling and 4 bass shakers) so I ended up keeping them just to add a bit more punch to the room before getting the bass shakers.. they'll definitely make it shake, but they don't have the same tight punch the R-120's will get you, and both of them behaved the exact same way no matter what I did
I hear bad things about the wireless unit and amp in these lower end Klipsch subs.
That being said, Ive been running the wired version of this sub, the R12SW with my RP 600Ms for over a year now. Its a very boomy sub, not exactly clear bass but itll shake your house (to each their own, the GF loves it). I have mine set at 30% and it still rattles the walls.

Can you explain that in a simple terms?
30% - are you indicating that the GAIN dial on back is set to 30%? meaning less than the 12 o'clock position
"low pass" - how do you set that? General practice is to set Low-Pass dial on back of subwoofer to LFE and let the receiver do the job of frequency roll-over to sub.
Gain to 10 o clock and low pass to around 100-110 hz
Note: my HT room size comparatively smaller it's 14x11
Just purchased a pair of Klipsch Fives and love them so far. The more they get played, the better they sound. I am aware they are not high-end audio, but they are the best pair of speakers I've ever owned. Have been thinking about adding a sub, but the amount of options is daunting. What are thoughts on these compared to the Costco Klipsch deal? I don't care about the wireless functionality, just want the best bang for the buck!
Boomy sound has to do with sub not properly set to room.
Or it could be a poorly designed sub. Poor Ts parameters, cheap driver, too large of a driver in a small cabinet, poor port size, length or design. Tuning of sub not ideal for HT. Garbage driver with poor Xmax that bottoms out. Port chuffing. Thin walls. Weak amplifier with high distortion.
I'm a big fan of buying a well built high end used sub vs a new entry level model with poor construction and components.
Find a used Mirage Omni S10 or S12. It's the closest you'll come to SVS or HSU for half to a third of the price. They are out there. Avoid the S8. Big jump in quality to the 10".

Love my Fives! Yeah supposedly not "high end" speakers, but they're fun. I enjoy just about all kinds of music with them but haven't tried them with my living room setup because I have AppleTV with two full size HomePods in stereo I like for that, and a complete home theater setup in our basement.
I tried the Jamo SW from here on SD and thought the Fives bass was better so I returned that. Ended up bringing up our SVS SB2000 from downstairs and it definitely sounds good. You can get one of those for around $550 on Ebay. Eventually, my wife will realize how ridiculous it is that I have to drag it downstairs every time we have movie night and will green light the purchase of another one, because I'm not settling for anything else now that I've heard them together lol. I don't know if any of these cheaper subs will do it for you if only because the bass output on the Fives is so good. I think it takes a pretty good sub to help them sound any better, but that's just my opinion man. Good luck!
In for one! Just need something for a budget home theater, think I'll be more than happy with this one. Thanks OP!
You'll be happy - note though to take care of the SE transmitter it comes with. The cord can become loose and separate.
Also note, the sub can still be wired if needed... ask me how I know!
All the talk of boomy sound is only a partial truth. This sub was designed to pull double duty as a decent home theater sub for video content, but also as a stereo sub for music. Choose which is your priority and adjust the low pass filter accordingly (mine is set to 80hz).

My dude carrying the subwoofer up and down 😲 You are my hero lol
Yes it has a separate transmitter that has a USB-micro port for power and a SE RCA jack to connect to your amp/dac sub out. The receiver is located internally in the sub and cannot be removed or used in another device*.
*I have never opened mine up so I really don't know how they implemented the receiver design.
Not exactly sure why there are so many "its boomy" sounding. I have 2 of the non wireless r12sw models set at 50% combined with a 7.2 2 system all Klipsch. I think personally for the price these are a great deal. Sure you can spend more and get a better sub but price to performance these are house shakers. Got mine during klipsch promo and paid $150.00 each. Bought through Adorama and they had Costco stickers on the box covered up with another label. They are great.
Would these work well with my SPL-15s to upgrade from a 7.2.4 to a 7.4.4? Thinking of putting these in the back but I'd have to use a y splitter since my Denon 3700H only has two sub outputs

I would personally wait for the R-120SW to go on sale again (typically $199)
I have 2x R-12SW and 1x R-120SW and found the 120 to work much better.
I'm running them in a 7.3.4 setup, with an extra 4x bass shakers in a couch -- the R-12SW's need to be turned down so low to not sound "boomy" that it's hard to recommend. I'm also using on a Denon x3600h with Y splitters
The R-10SW, despite a smaller size, give a much better a much "tighter" thump and are a better purchase
EDIT: you mention putting them in the back - it might work OK in that situation. I put 1x behind my couch (before the bass shakers) and it worked OK to add some thump, but as a main sub I can't recommend it
