This has 8,000 calories for $23. For $2 more you can get the Augason Farms 48 hour 4 person kit, with 10,910 calories.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Augaso...hbdg=L1600

It's normally $25 and short money for a lot of calories in a short term emergency. This deal is fine but from the same company and only $2 more you get more calories.

Edit: it's 2,661 calories per day, about 8,000 total.

That does seem like a better deal, just wanted to point out that OP's listing is 2667 calories per day, for a total of 8000 calories for the 72 hours.

Good catch, thought it was 2,667 total. Not uncommon for higher quality foods like Mountain House at this price.

Agree yours is a good deal too. Just curious how 10,910 is 4x the calories of 8,001 (2,667 x 3) ? .023 per cal vs. .029.

The other thing to consider is how it will be used and what is needed. For the 3 day one all that is needed is hot water. The 48 hour one requires a frying pan for the pancakes.

These are pretty cheap kits for short term. It's a good company but if you want higher quality food with "meat" look at Ready Wise ior Mountain House.

In general, a person can survive one or two months without food. This product seems like it exists for the anxious.

Alternately, you could just buy canned goods and put them in a $4 food safe bucket with a lid, then cycle them out every 18 to 24 months. This will give you a much wider variety of higher quality and better tasting food, and remove most of the need for finding and heating additional water. It's actually probably more important to first make sure that you have a significant and secure potable water supply before you start looking into food storage. If you want to long-term store a lot of dry goods like pasta, rice, steel cut oats, flower/mixes etc, you're going to want to look into getting a vacuum sealer/foodsaver.

Here are a couple of my wayback-old posts that explain a little bit more.

These have a place in any plan. Realistically any house has 1-2 weeks or more of food at any given time.

Depending on your need:

1. Could add a few days to your food supply you don't need to think about.
2. Could be part of a go bag if you need some food when you hop in the car, or foot.
3. Could be good in a second location in your house like the basement. Might not have access to a above ground floor for a period of time.

There are a lot better solutions but something like this, for the short money can be useful depending on your situation. I mean do you live on a farm with a pond in KY or a 100 sq ft apartment in downtown NYC?

As far as water, most people have 40 gallons sitting in their hot water heater. But that would not last that long depending on the number of people.

Shit happens, inevitably. Even if you aren't one of those "Doomsday bunker preppers", it's still a really good idea to give yourself and your family a little bit of food safety if something unexpected occurs.

You don't want to be a tnor in an emergency situation.

Products like this all depend on where you live and what you realistically anticipate for an emergency situation. If you envision an emergency scenario where you can shelter in place, have access to water, electricity etc. and the "emergency" is more of an inconvenience, you probably do not need this. If you envision emergencies that are not quite on your own terms / may need to evacuate on short notice then this may be more something you want to incorporate.

I see adding this to my car kit. I never really considered this as much of a need in the past but the highway shutdown this past winter where people were stranded in their cars for 24 hours made me rethink this. This kit is self contained, small, and requires no maintenance or special equipment other than an ability to heat water.

You should probably cancel your home, auto, life and health insurance, that way you can -really- relax.

It is possible for there to be different probabilities of events
