The problem is my kid (my son) will ride the 24 inch bike for maybe 3 years (4th grade to about 6th grade) before he outgrows the bike. He's too big for his kid bike and still too short for the full on adult bike, which is where these 24 inch bikes come in. I feel like it's alright to cheap out on this "transitional" bike, so when he gets better at shifting and whatnot, he can get a better bike.

(For that matter, I didn't even spend $178. I spent $75 at Target for a Huffy 24 inch bike.)

No, that is the geometry of a lot of bikes now.

There're two trains of thought on kids bikes.

The first is that the child will only be riding it for a year or two, so a cheap throwaway bike will be good enough. It's also less likely to be stolen.

The second is that a nicer bike will be nicer for them to ride, require less maintanence cost, and will still be in nice enough shape when they're done to be handed down to the next child, cousin, etc, or sold to recoup much of the initial cost.

I can expound on that if you'd like.
I didnt buy one, because, although it's a great price, we do actual mountain biking and the fork was garbage (like it takes an adult's weight to get it to compress, then has terrible stiction half way through the travel). And it felt really heavy.

So although the frame, and disk brakes seemed decent, and it did have trigger shifters, which I liked., I figured Id end up spending more money than a better bike would cost trying to upgrade the Schwinn (between forks, drivetrain, and who-knows what else), so stuck w/ the Co-op DRT 24 that we just bought from REI for $288.

I had to write a comment as I purchased this at my local Walmart about 2 months ago. I have not owned a bike since I was a kid and the only reason why I purchase a bike was because I went to go trail riding with some friends who let me borrow their Cannondale trail bike. To those who are considering this, please don't buy it…like others have commented here, buy a used bike that's better quality. There is a night and day difference between this bike and the Cannondale I was riding. Please don't waste your money on this.

To be fair, you're comparing bikes that are easily $1000+ (Cannondale) vs a cheap Schwinn bike from Walmart at $180. If you're serious about trail riding, I'd definitely splurge and buy a nicer bike. These 24 inch bikes are, in my opinion, transitional bikes that gets kids from their little kid bikes to the adult - I can keep it 10+ year - bikes. I just don't want to spend a lot of money on a transitional bike.

I've been scowering Craigstlist for a decent bike, too, but all I ever see are old bikes that are crazily priced.

Yes you are very right about that. However they do sell Cannondale trails for 600-700 at REI but I see some 2018+ Cannondale on used market place like OfferUp, Facebook market and sometimes Craigslist…even police property room online sales. I'm still discovering other bike brands like Trek and Specialized. There are a lot more options aside from this bike here. But it's really up to what your needs are and how comfortable you are with buying a used bike.

Is this a female bike? I haven't rode a bike in a long time but shouldn't the mens bike have a straight bar in the middle?

In the 90's when we feel off, we crushed our balls, and we liked it.

Did you just assume the bike's gender. This model uses they/them

I remember back in the early 90's and Schwinn made an awesome bike. Doubt that's the same any longer.

a little more, but something you can actually repair the parts on when they break. https://www.rei.com/product/14316...-kids-bike
Lol. A little more? Like a paltry 150% more?

Kids bikes are so polarizing. Half the people say cheap because they'll outgrow them quickly, the other wouldn't dare put their kids on a low quality bike because they'll have a subpar experience. We splurged on a Woom 4, and yes, it's insanely expensive for a kids bike, but my 7 year old now rides faster than I do. It's an amazing experience and it's due to the weight and how they're constructed for kids as opposed to being a shrunken adult version like you'll find in a Walmart. I grew up poor and had cheap-o bikes most of my life. But I remember the heavy feeling on those huffy bikes and while I still enjoyed my time on them, it's a vastly different experience.

I grew up on cheap bikes period buy it and replace it in two years. No big deal. No way I would ever spend 1,000 on a bike

Any suggestions for something between the schwins and the Cannondale - where would you place the coops at REI .. also how does ordering via REI work - does it come assembled or do they do it for you ? I see that it does mention they do tuneups for free for the first year

Schwinn does have higher priced models - not sure how good they are

Schwinn has gone bankrupt twice since then. The first time they were resurrected into a fairly decent Boulder, CO based company. The second time they were liquidated and Pacific Cycle (cheap box store bike brand) bought the name to slap on their low quality stuff.

The Schwinn name no longer means much.
