What's the difference between this and 3/8 and one's at 1/4 and others? Why would you shop for one versus the other?

size of the job. thicker metal = can sustain more force, etc. also consider the availability of the socket sizes to be used in either. google whatever project you're likely going to do, see what size sockets you'd need, and thus which set you're more likely to use.

1/4" drive size is for smaller fasteners with 6-12mm heads (or SAE equivalent)
3/8" drive size is for most fasteners in the 10-19mm range (or SAE equivalent)
1/2" drive size is for larger fasteners 16mm and up (or SAE equivalent)

If working on vehicles you'll likely be needing all three.

I'm just looking for a basic set for general needs… For a very long time I've had this set I got… I don't even know where… Big plastic case with sockets but rather than a right angle wrench it uses a screwdriver base for them, and I've considered I should have a right angle style wrench style in my tool collection.

I'm pretty much planning on just waiting for Father's Day sales to get some general tool set of them. Then if the time comes I need something more specific, I'll get that but for my basic needs I think a standard (Whatever that is) set is all I need (i.e. something cheap :-))

Anyone done the comparison with the 1/4 set? It's also on sale for $29 and is tempting to buy both, but I don't really have the space for 2 sets if most are duplicates.

I got 3 of these sets. HD shipped them all in one giant box, which was a box full of random sockets falling out of it, and 3 smashed plastic cases upon arrival. 0/10.
