If Hilton is offering 3x points that means point stays are going up 8x. Of course, after 7 pages trying to identify buses and crosswalks and trucks I gave up even trying to log in. Worst website ever.

Sorry, but I am not familiar with the point system for hotels. What do points equate to I guess in dollar terms?

I believe it's suppose to be 10,000 points for every $50 towards hotel room

It's two part:
1. You earn points for each paid stay and that amount varies by hotel brand, room rate and time of year.
2. You can then redeem those points for a stay and same as above, the point value varies by hotel brand and then room rates.

For example, I stayed at the Times Square Marriott for work and 4 nights and earned over 12k points. I then stayed at a fairfield inn & suites for one night and got a couple hundred points. The difference is Marriott branded hotels, especially in NYC ($475/night) will earn a lot more points than a fairfield inn in the middle of nowhere that is usually $70/night.

Same with redemption, getting that times square marriott with points would be something like 60-70k/night whereas the fairfield would be 8k or something. Unfortunately most of my points history is gone since it is longer than 24 months and I used to travel a lot for work.

Anyone with expiring points, you can gift them. Just let me know if you want to gift me points, I promise to use or gift appropriately (hey better than letting them expire Wave)

Honestly? Not much. Roughly 0.4 (not 4 cents, 4/10 of 1 cent) to 0.6 cents per point. Hilton continuously devalues their reward stays and are generally not a good value. Marriott is better, but not by much

Hyatt is generally considered one of the best hotel loyalty programs with low redemption rates. You should usually expect to get around 1.6 cents per point. Although they don't have the global footprint of others. Chase is Hyatts main credit card transfer partner.

Points are generally earned on room rate only, and often don't include purchases made at on-property restaurants, stores, etc. [this is YMMV, as some locations such stores and restaurants are more like independently operated tenants] Obviously not on all the BS taxes and fees either. Usually points are based on multipliers as a function of your status and CC usage. So, a "base rate" might be 10 ppd (points per dollar) for everyone, then an additional 5 ppd per status level (or even more, it might accelerate the higher you go), then most of these chains also have cobranded CC's that give you another multiplier.

Marriott, for example, is 10 ppd for most properties (only 5 for some brands), silver gets you an additional 10% (11), gold +25% (12.5), platinum +50% (15ppd), titanium +75% (17.5 ppd), etc. Using the co-branded Chase CC (at Marriott locations) gives + 6ppd. So if you're Titanium and use your Marriott CC you could be earning ~ 23.5ppd.

You're right though, points redemption is somewhat wonky - I've stayed in places on business that were crazy expensive for where they were IMHO, but absolutely dirt cheap from a points redemption POV; realize that people are predominantly redeeming points for vacation stays (pleasure, e.g. non-business) but paying in cash for both business (not so cost conscious) and personal (probably very cost conscious) stays. So, you could very well have places that have about zero appeal for people staying on personal time, but a lot for business and you wind up with skewed points/$ valuations. The one location that comes to mind was a place (Marriott brand, forget which) in Wichita that I often stayed at before flying out (business) - it wasn't near the airport (not an airport hotel) but within 10-15 mins driving. It was like $200/night but the lowest tier from a points perspective. I guess no one is interested in staying in downtown Wichita laugh out loud

Me too. It was one of the easiest SlickDeals I've ever taken advantage of.

Maybe because I'm already a member, so they sent me a verification code. No crosswalks or busses.

I have 500k Hilton points, and it's like five nights worth of "Premium Room Reward"... I won't even tell you the number of years it took staying at ho-hum Hampton Inn and HGI locations in middle America to get to that number.

That being said, I like the Hilton offering of hotels for its consistency at lower prices. But their points program is shit.

I also had the same issues. I persisted and got through eventually. That captcha was extra rough for no reason.

Dumb question… I assume we cannot earn these 2X points (through the promo) for using points for those night stays?
