I see someone asked about cooling a garage, but what are peoples thoughts about using this in place of a gas heater to heat a garage during the winter? Im up in MN and i've heard that these lose a lot of functionality below certain temps, but would really like to use it to heat my 3 stall garage (fully insulated). Doesnt need to be super warm, just like 50 or something to tolerate being out there during the winter months.
Look into the newer cold-climate mini splits for this application. Many of these (more expensive) units are rated for 80% efficiency down to -20 f.

Thanks for the reply. I see its got a HSPF rating of 10 which seems pretty decent. How much higher do the HSPF ratings go? I honestly dont need it to be toasty in the garage, just nice enough to chill out there with a couple beers and watch some tv without shivering. :-)

Note that the company is limited in its support options. Not complaining because the support they DO provide is great, but when my floor console needed a replacement circuit board, they mailed me a bare part with no instructions. They'll walk you through the process if you call them, but you have to actually call them - no guides available, and if you have to hire a professional to come help, that's on you.

At least replacing a circuit board is pretty painless. Not sure what would happen if, say, the whole loop had to be drained for a compressor swap.

btw there is a wifi module available for this on the HD website for 34.99. This is also a 1/4 x 3/8 connection for those who need a longer line set. i confirmed with customer service.
Can you send the link to the WiFi module you are talking about?

Looking at the 24K btu system for a 1,200 sqft garage/workshop. Any thoughts? How well does it handle having a single inside unit?

My prior experiences have all involved multiple inside units for a space that large.
Works fine with just one head, although I believe efficiency will be slightly lower since it'll never exceed 50% capacity.

Although that sounds like you're planning to use a 12K head to cool 1200 sqft, which is asking a lot. May want to hook up both heads for the full 24K, with some distance between them.

Can I cool a two car garage with this?
Most likely. A two car garage is usually around 400 sq ft. As long as it is insulated (why bother with any unit if it isn't?) it should work.

Note the efficiency curve: https://www.pdhvac.com/site/downl...22seer.pdf

By the time your outdoor temp hits -5, their 24K BTU loses half its capacity and can only generate 12K BTU of heat.

I'm looking to heat/cool a finished garage space in NY. It is around 250sqft with a vaulted ceiling, moderate insulation and a wall of windows. I haven't been in the house during the summer yet to know how hot it gets, but during the winter it hovered in the 50's with outside temps in the 20s and 30s. Thoughts on this for size, I'm thinking it's too big.

Damn I bought this exact unit back in January now already past their 3 months return window. Any chance for a price adjustment? Wondering if anyone had success with situations like this.

Btw I already installed it myself and it's easier than I thought after watching a few YouTube videos. If you have questions just ask here or PM me.

I'm in MN as well and bought the 12k BTU model last year for this purpose for my garage shop. It was fine until the temps hit single digits and it choked under that. I had to supplement with my kerosene burner. HOWEVER that was the non-low ambient model, so today I ordered the 18k BTU low-ambient model and will be putting that in the garage shop and moving the existing one to the house where it will only perform cooling duty.

Check your local utility for incentives / rebates.

This might qualify for a $1000 rebate here in Oregon via Energy Trust But it has to be replacing plain electric heat and it requires installation by a registered contractor so I'm not sure how that works if buying via Home Depot.

I suspect there's some variables on this. For instance, is the garage insulated (walls, ceiling, garage door)?
Then there's the ceiling height thing, although that affects heating more.

My own situation is a two and half car garage, but 13' ceiling height and no insulation, just wallboard. Wish we'd gotten it insulated while building, or at least before the wallboard...

The specs list it as having wifi

is that built in, or do you need a separate module?

Heads up, regardless of what the specs say, mini splits typically heat well until about 20 or below outside. Once it hits that, they tend to struggle. You should have a back up helper heat source for anything under 20 IMO. I live in Ohio, and many use these. AC wise, they rock as long as your spot is insulated and you purchase the correct size. But, heat wise for the days below 20, have a back up source to help it out.

I think a lot of people are thinking this can be DYI easily. A few things to consider:

1. No matter what unit you buy, you can't just plug in. Unless you're replacing one, you'll have to run wire from your break box to a disconnect outside. Most people will need an electrician
2. I read the q and a section of this product and it does require vacuuming the pipes so essentially you need to buy the speciality tools or hire HVAC. The Mr Cool DYI product is more expensive (I assume) since this isn't required.
