This isn't even a good deal. These grilles are meant to be used for more than a decade I'm sure. You can get a comparable big green egg package for 50 bucks less. This is not a deal

Thanks! While the Large Egg is about $50 cheaper as you said, the comparison is more apples to oranges than most people realize.
The Large Egg more directly competes with the Kamado Joe Classic II (which is also on sale for $1049 at Amazon). Many people prefer even the KJC2 to the BGE, but I've never owned a KJC2 so I can't speak to that.
The KJC3 was introduced as a grill that exists a tier above the Large BGE, so in theory they're not supposed to be comparable. The KJC3 comes with more accessories, has superior hardware, but is priced well above the BGE normally. It's also rated consistently better than the Large BGE (a quick search will provide loads of comparisons, but here's one: https://youtu.be/zlAktkAdMK4), with most saying that the two aren't in the same class.
BGEs don't really "go on sale", so the fact that you could get a superior grill for the same as what you would pay for a BGE is what makes this a deal.

I guess it's a matter of opinion on the difference between the two. Why do you think the large compares to the classic II when the large and the classic III are the same size?
You can kind of see it in the video I linked, but while the KJC3 is the same diameter as the Large BGE it's actually noticeably longer. My assumption is that they did this to accommodate the new SlōRoller in the KJC3, but if you're smoking it's objectively better to keep your meat as far from the heat source as possible, especially if your smoker is prone to flare ups. So I give the advantage to the KJC3, both for the longer size as well as the SlōRoller. The BGE doesn't have anything comparable that I'm aware of.
Ultimately, though, I agree that it comes down to preference. My SO's dad let me use his BGE a few times and I really liked it, but I personally like how aggressively Kamado Joe is going after the BGE's market share. They know that they have to meet or exceed the quality of the BGE since that's where the brand's value lies, while also trying to innovate with creative new accessories and technology, like the SlōRoller.
I don't think any of that would dissuade my SO's dad from his love of his BGE, so therein lies your point I guess.
