At this price point how much of a flavor improvement do you expect?

The improvement won't be in flavor, it will be in cooking time and process (which is amazing). Otherwise, it's the same flavor you get from a smoker or any charcoal grill.

I really want to hold off for the big joe III for the space…does anyone regret getting the classic size?

I expect it to taste like Chef Ramsey cooked the steak personally.

I believe it comes down to how often you have a big gathering that required the big grill. I went from the Akorn (20") to the BJ II and I found myself not needing the BJ as often as I thought then recently got the JR (from the recent $194 deal). My next one will be the Classic. You can always add an expansion (2nd tier) if you need more cooking space. I bought one from the Ceramic Grill Store in Texas for the BJ when I had a big party and it works great.

Perhaps wait for the next deal for the Classic I in the sub $500 to try it out before jumping on a BJ.

I'd have to smoke about once a week to justify the cost. Bet it looks beautiful but man…that's expensive

I'm waiting for a good sized one at about 500-800.

I grill a lot of meat at a time just for me. Whether it's 12 burgers twice a week or 10 burgers and a few steaks, I'm concerned the classic may be too small.

I've seen on Home Depot's website, the classic can do 20 burgers. Is that realistic?

I have the 20" Akorn which has a large main cooking area and a smaller elevated rack, and I'd say at most I'd make 8 burgers at a time on there and would only use the main grate.

Edit: the Akorn is comparable to the standard Classic. The 22 burger estimate is for the Big Joe, which is 24" main grate vs 18 for the standard.

They're probably taking into consideration the multi-level rack design but even with that I would say no way. Plus I don't think they ever take into account that you want some spacing between food for proper air flow. Check out the sample photos on Amazon for a good laugh. All that said, this is a great price for the III especially if you're going to use it for smoking with the slo roller, but I'm holding out for a steep price cut on the Big Joe III to replace my Akorn.

IMHO, the difference between Classic II and III is negligible. Here is the article outlining this: https://www.smokedbbqsource.com/k...ii-vs-iii/ (scroll about 1/4 page down). The Classic II could've been had for $900-1000 recently (search SD if you need to) so I don't believe OP is a deal at all. While SlōRoller is around $250 MSRP, you can smoke/slow-roast without it as easily. The only accessory that I use all the time and is worth the money is automatic temperature controllers which neither Classic II or III include.

I use this one: https://www.bbqguys.com/flame-bos...it-fb400-u but there are multiple others available:

Assuming one already owns the Classic II, it doesn't seem worthwhile to upgrade. But if I were buying a KJ for the first-time, the Classic III's upgrades seem worthwhile:

- 3-tier and SloRoller = more height from the heat source. The extra tier does offer more flexibility with cooking grates and deflectors. The teflon coating on the SloRoller is an absolutely dumb concept, but as long as you don't test the 500f limit, you should be fine.
- heavier-duty cart vs the Classic II (and provides storage)
- the charcoal basket is designed to improve fuel efficiency (hard to prove, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The conal shape does make sense from a physics standpoint)
- side shelves are powder-coated aluminum, definitely nicer than the Classic II if you compare the two side-by-side

To me, the alllure of Kamado-style grill is that we can experiment with more indirect/multi-zone grilling options. The Classic II was perfectly fine in all regards, but if you're already going near $1k, the additional price point of the Classic III seems very worthwhile (at this sale price). Of course, moving up to the Big Joe would be even better, but budgets can only stretch so much...

In any event, I would never get a pellet smoker. Big pellet smokers are to grilling like woke culture is to comedy = they just kill all the fun. Having more ways to play with indirect cooking zones is just too cool to pass up.

Appreciate it. We are in the same boat for the Big Joe III, definitely the better decision. Here's to hoping it touches 1999.99 like last year...
