An emergency is not when you should be setting up a generator and hoping it will work. Set it up now and test run it every few months.

I would at least fire it up and test run it on propane. If it's going to be sitting a long time I wouldn't put gasoline in it.

You guys are all killing me with these generator deals the last couple of days.... Looks like it's time to just make it happen before they get hard to find and $$$

edit: no brainer, getting it. final decision made by a Ng conversion kit specific to this model for about 130 on fleabay making this like only the best option for a portable generator imo.

Is there any harm in storing generators unopened for long periods of time? I'd like to buy this, but won't use it for a while.
Not really. Only if you get a lemon. Also a breaking period is good for any genny especially China made. But it would be a minimal return on investment if you remember to swap out the original oil after the first major use.

The Westinghouse WGen12000 on the same page listed for $1671 and it has less than 5% harmonic distortion. Similarly can be retrofitted for propane/natural gas with a conversion kit if anyone is looking for a larger wattage generator
I was looking to get the WGen12000 DF earlier this week. However the non DF one here is about 1k cheaper. What conversion kit did you use and is it easy to do?

I have not ordered the kit yet, so I can't speak for the installation process, however this is one of the ones I found for it.

I have this and converted it to tri-fuel to run off my home's natural gas. Works really well, although NG doesn't produce as much power as gasoline.
Be advised on NG it will produce less than propane as well.

anyone have any experience with the asurion protection plans? Is it worth it on a generator?

Mind that total harmonic distortion on this model is 23% or less, whereas inverter generators are 5% or less.
I was looking at two TV's today, one has a contrast ratio of 3,000:1 the other was 50,000:1

Mind that many specs from manufacturers are misleading. Just ask my $7 5000 lumen flashlight Wink

The only difference between the WGen9500DF and the WGen9500DFc [amazon.com] is that the DFc has that a CO sensor. Yes, the DFc costs $88.43 more, but I think it's worth it. If I remember right I believe the DFc is also the newest model.

Which conversion kit did you use, was thinking about doing that as well. Thanks.
I used this one [centuryfuelproducts.com] from Century Fuel. Going from gasoline to propane loses around 10%, and then going to NG loses another 10% from propane (very rough estimates). So NG won't run as much, but it's great to have the option if you lose power and don't have gas or propane. The conversion retains the other fuel options too, so it becomes tri-fuel.

Bought this same generator last summer and have had to use it a few times (days at a time) along with our whole house switch and it performed really well. Didn't test it too hard by managing the load. But it easily ran 2 fridges, a freezer, plus lights and tv's, stove in occasion. Very happy with it.

How's this one's quality compares with Duromax 12,000w and Champion 9,200w tri fuel, seems all at the same price level when on sale

If you're considering this, it might be prudent to read the one star Amazon reviews. Oh, and also try to find any information about the "Westinghouse" (Westpro = China) engine...or parts availability. Caveat Emptor

Yes, a Honda or other major brand generator costs significantly more...but in the long run will prove a value.
how far out is the long run? that is, do we measure generator lifetime in absolute time or just hours used? it's highly unlikely i would put more than 85 hours on it before i leave this house and pass it on. that would equate to $10/hour plus fuel (less assuming i can sell it for a couple hundred).
