I use ProChem dry slurry. It's the same stuff that a professional used when I had hired him. Works extremely well and the 6 pound container will easily last me years upon years

I wouldn't buy any carpet cleaner unless it contains "Oxy" (sodium percarbonate) - Bissell makes a spot cleaner- "Bissell Professional Power Shot Oxy Carpet Spot" that is amazing. Had a friend spill a full cup of coffee on an off-white carpet - this Bissell Oxy stuff cleaned the spot after it sat for a week. This stuff is for spot removal, but Bissell also makes carpet cleaners with oxy.

I use my own concoction without all the chemicals: 1gal hot tap water, 1tbsp Dawn or other dish soap, 4oz hydrogen peroxide

Does a pretty good job cleaning my carpet. The water is always nasty, tho I haven't tested which has more effective, hot water only or in combination with the soap.

I'd say it's safe even for babies. You could always use dish soap that's made of natural ingredients. The key is to add just enough to get stuff like grease out of the carpet. At 1 tbsp/gal, it's pretty diluted, but you can still get that squeaky clean feeling if you wash your hands in it.
