I've owned an Apple Watch since the first one and tried cellular when it first came out on Apple Watch 3. I kept it active for 2 months but not a single time was I actually without my phone where I needed the watch to have its own data. If you run frequently and think it's worth $120/year to not carry your phone with you then go for it, but pretty much zero use case otherwise. I'm curious those that spend the money what their use/justification is? Not TCing, legitimately wondering.
I have heard that people want their kids to have an apple watch intead of a smartphone.

I run nearly every day and when there is considerable rain I would love to leave my phone at home while listening to podcasts off my watch. I've successfully done it a few times, but the apps I use to download podcasts to my watch (Overcast, Outcast) are very slow/cumbersome to transfer to my watch. The $120/yr might be worth it to me, but then again my current watch is only GPS so I'd have to upgrade that as well. Smilie

Curious which Provider these guys use to piggyback off of for their signal. If anyone could chime in.

I would say this is a better deal if you are just doing this for yourself. This is the best and cheapest option for phone service and having the apple watch on a cellular plan 40/25 + $5.

I tried setting up via truphone, it's more like setting it up for another individual than yourself. It was just a pain, also you will have two numbers and wasn't able to set up call forwarding. Didn't get to far but it was pretty annoying to try to set up, recommend going the visible route if you want a cheap cell service with an apple watch plan otherwise you will be paying up to $80 a month through Verizon/AT&T/T-Mobile as an individual. Visible is a subsidiary of Verizon, so coverage is really good as well.

I use it when I'm out running and justify the expense for the convenience of leaving my phone at home and still being reachable by my children. Not having a huge phone strapped to my body also makes for a more enjoyable run for me.

If I run 10 times a month, it costs me $1 each time I use this service. For me, it's justified paying that for what I get in return. For someone else, they may chose to spend that $10 at Starbucks, a monthly streaming service or whatever else may make them happy. To each their own Smilie

How long do you run for that you are that scared your children cannot reach you? How old are they? If they are that young, shouldn't an adult be with them at all times? Or are you talking about adult children?

Weeeeeellll, no! It's a HUGE YMMV. I ported into visible after test-driving it with their free trial. After committing, my data throughput is below 1 Mbps at home, in many places of the northern greater Houston are it's plainly unusable. Short: while the plan is indeed unlimited in many places you won't be able to actually using it due to visibles excessive throttling. It's basically 2G.

Sounds like an issue with your device/sim. I've used Visible all across the country (including Harris County) with little issues as it uses Verizon towers. Their service supports 5G, so I woudk suggest viewing the FCC map that lists each carrier's coverage to ensure you weren't in a deadzone.

So is the kid's watch tied to YOUR iPhone? If yes, doesn't your kid then get messages and alerts that are tied to your phone?
Do you have a watch yourself that is also tied to your iPhone?
I'm curious how all of this would work so that the watch is truly standalone.
EDIT: I think I get it. Completely forgot about watchOS/iOS Family Setup. I was thinking family mode for Truphone setup. Confused

God US watch and tablet plans are so expensive. Family overseas pays about $3-$4 a month. $10 a month is just excessive. $120 a year just for the convenience of not having your phone near you seems a bit much.
That's what happens when corporations control your government and you have a population stupid enough to vote in corporate sponsored candidates.

This. I just gave in and got my 13 year old an iPhone plan (with my ancient iPhone 6, heh) but I would have preferred to get her just a watch to limit her access to trashy stuff. I gave up because I could not find this kind of plan! Good work OP, too late for me now but it may help other parents. (My company pays for my cell and wife is prepaid so I couldn't just add a watch to my plan.)
