Seems like such a niche product. Not sure who would buy this.

Seems like two niche products crammed into one. On one hand its comparable to other "gamer" soundbars for PC which are usually decent compact substitutes for a speaker that do "okay". On the other hand it has bluetooth and audio out with the following high end DAC:
"Hi-Fi Quad DAC - ESS9038 Pro", which is in theory comparable with other standalone DACs in the 300 range (however no idea if the audio implementation is good).

I would personally think of it more as buying it for the high end DAC that just happens to have a battery, bluetooth, and speaker but that's just me. Probably will get one and give it a shot.

The original $400 is insane. Even $200 seems high. The only reason I could see owning something like this is if you plan on traveling with your laptop. Otherwise, you can get better studio speakers for the same price or cheaper. Shoot, my Dolby Atmos surround system was $260 (open box).
Best Buy open box or which place?

I believe it's due to its "positional" sound when using as a speaker. I think it's going for a headphone replacement, hence the noise canceling part as well. I guess theoretically you would be able to communicate clearly when using a speaker, which normally doesn't happen unless you have a super cardioid mic or something like that. Honestly, that dac is usually 200ish by itself so I'm tempted just to use it for that.
This is well said. If you have a very small room this could provide nice sound, or if you can leverage talking through it as a communication device then this could be decent. Being portable is nice for a LAN gathering, but those are pretty occasional nowadays. I would've preferred that they axe the battery and went all in on DAC/Amp implementation. I could definitely see some folks being appealed with eliminating separate stacks and having speaker output all in one package for a PC desk setup. There are plenty of folks out there with desks measuring less than 5 feet in width. I use a Topping E30 with an SMSL SP200. This may be pretty good still for openback audiophile cans due to that DAC. If those scenarios apply to you this seems like a decent option at this price. It would be a pretty nice deal at 150, again due to that quad DAC. Not many soundbars have something that good implemented in them.

Razer also just launched their Levaithan V2 and for what it is not a bad option. It has Bluetooth 5.2 now with multipoint. Razer owns THX so they incorporated the spatial tech into it as well. The Katana V1 refurbished sounds good, the V2 is even better. All of these companies are stepping it up finally improving these offerings with the newer models.

but it has a rotting battery inside plus dsp sound effects that get in the way if you care at all about transparency.

A few off the top of my head: Razer Leviathan, Creative Stage, Creative Katana
There are others. Everyone always says the soundbars don't do as well as pretty much any other setup but they can be useful in some situations.

I'm an avid SDer. My office desk is that desk that was on sale about 1-2 years ago that was being clearances out. Great components but a small top. I have my 32" monitor on a swing arm so it takes no surface space at all while leaving the space underneath it unusable for much. A desktop sound bar works perfectly for me. It fills the footprint where the monitor stand would have sat. I have the Katana not this one and don't regret it one bit.

This battlestation is fully operational.

This was 149 at gamestop as their deal of the day last month. It will definitely go lower soon I think.

Gaming speakers is a gimmick lol. I use both klipsch R51PM with svs1000pro and LG SP9YG. just find a soundbar at reasonable price and it will be cheaper than these "gaming speakers" btw I paid less than 300 for the LG soundbar and it has Dolby atmos.

Except it's not. I have yet to see a review that actually looks at the sound quality of the DAC itself but given that LG does not compete in the high end DAC space I doubt this one is any good.

Except it's not. You can get the topping DX5 DAC / AMP for $450 and that's a top 5 DAC that competes with $800+ units. I have yet to see a review that actually looks at the sound quality of the DAC itself but given that LG does not compete in the high end DAC space I doubt this one is any good.
So what you're doing is speculating and comparing it to something that currently costs over 50% more. So yeah it's a good deal.

lol, you just said I'm speculating.

Pray tell then, how can you say this is a good deal without knowing the DAC quality? That's right, you guessed.

What a hypocrite. No, what I did is called an educated guess. LG doesn't make high end DAC so it's safe to assume the DAC portion of this isn't good.

MSRP is $500 and the price drop just goes to show how nothing in this unit is worth anywhere near that price tag.

I don't really need to know the dac quality as it currently costs over 50 percent less. Sure they don't make high end dacs but does this mean this one isn't fine for under 200 bucks for someone possibly just dabbling in dacs. Sure we'd all love the one you mentioned but are you going to cough up the extra 250 for someone? Or would I be just fine if I'm looking for a fairly decent dac with bonus features? That's what makes this an ok deal. Can you name other decent dacs that are currently below $200?

No one said it was better than even a $90 DAC silly. You keep trying to force that comparison to show this thing in a good light when no one knows how good the DAC is.

If you are dabbling in DACs you should buy a unit that's actually been reviewed, not guess on a unit with unknown quality.

There are PLENTY of decent DACs under $200. You can get a DAC / AMP easily for that amount (shciiit stack, o2+odac, Fiio products, ect), let alone just a DAC.

As I pointed out earlier, even the top 5 DX5 is a DAC / AMP combo, it includes both. You keep implying as if this is a good deal when this unit does not include an AMP. You can get just the DAC portion from topping for $225 and that blows a majority of the DACs on the market out of the water.
