All DeWalt battery operated tools are Max.

The Atomic is Max. The XR is Max. They're all Max.

Max* simply refers to them using the fully charged voltage (20v) as opposed to the operating voltage (18v) that other tool companies use.

Somewhere in the fine print it says:
* Maximum initial battery voltage (measured without a workload) is 20 volts. Nominal voltage is 18.

if you have two batteries, and keep one charging while using the rest, you can probably get through most home projects without a lot of stress or anger

That is a good deal too, especially if you're already invested in the Makita line. Personally, I'd rather use a smaller battery on a drill for lighter weight and maneuverability. The OP's Dewalt deal also comes with 2 batteries giving you a backup. Thumbs up OP.
You're right about the battery. That's the ONLY thing I didn't like about my Makita was the huge heavy battery. I hope I can come across a deal on one half that size. (But truth be told, I'm still working off my day-one charge!)

True, however I have this kit from years ago (wife bought it for me for XMAS), it's the only Dewalt cordless tool I own (I'm in the Ridgid platform extensively) and my plan was to get a bigger battery, thinking these were 2.0 Ah, but after using it for a while I decided not to as the batteries last a long time. The funny thing is, it was only recently I found out they were only 1.3 Ah! All the better. After about 4-5 years both batteries still last a long time. This is a great drill, I like it better than my Ridgid drills overall.

don't sleep on this guys...it's a very good deal!
It's an OK deal. It would be a very good deal if the tools were XR and the batteries were larger.

..and I use them constantly because they are also the LIGHTEST battery. They are perfect for small jobs when you don't want 10lbs of tools pulling your pants down.

So is there any reason to NOT get the atomic over this one?
I have the Atomic drivers- they are more than enough for anything I do; no construction work but plenty of homeowner tasks and DIY projects.

I snagged the 1/4 impact Makita for 79, when it popped up a few weeks ago
Seems like a solid deal

Agreed, this is a awesome deal, so tempted to get a third set just for the batteries.
1/4 or 1/2? Is there a real difference?

It has the least weight and easy on the hand for repeated work. These batteries last a long time when doing low torque jobs.
