As with anything, there are cheaper off-brands available. This is an entry level awning from a reputable brand and retailer that stand behind the product. The lesser variants use very cheap attachments and zippers. They also have their uses, but I would much rather pay a little more to buy from a known company, especially when it's a large object affixed to the roof of my car.
Great find! I paid full price ($349) for this last year through rei and don't regret it one bit. I know I could return it and buy this one now, but I'm going to buy a second one and use both. I use it on my teardrop trailer so now Ill have one for each side. Its built solidly and these things can catch a lot of wind once they're set up so Id be cautious of the cheaper versions.

If it's been less than a year, I'm not sure if they still do this, but REI may give you the difference in price. Years ago, bought Sony's version of the GoPro, it went bad after 10 months, brought it in to exchange, got a new camera and price reduction of about $100.
