You can control the speed of the fan and the light separately with this device.
A smart switch will only let you switch power to the fan on and off. You'll need the remote to change fan speed and the light.

You can control the fan from the app and if your fan only has one wire for both fan and fan light, this would help. Also if you have multiple fans in the house, would save money vs buying multiple switches for each fan and dealing with wiring.
Note: the further away the fan is, you may notice an increase in delay.

A smart switch doesn’t work for most hardwired (i.e. black hot/white neutral/green ground wires connected to breaker panel) ceiling fans because their initial startup state is off, just like after an outage. The same as turning on a smart switch, nothing will happen!
Some old fans have a harness with multiple non-black wires (besides the neutral and ground) from the different motor windings for different speeds would work for with smart switch in place of pull-cord or wall switch, but one smart switch’s required for each speed.
Many appliances nowadays are designed like this to work with microcontrollers/soft-touch switches, even a simple desk lamp may not work with a smart switch!

Its typically not; the reason that you buy this is you only have two wires (switched hot and neutral) going to your fan from the switch, you don't want to run new wire, your fan supports RF, and you want to automate turning the light on separately from turning on the fan.
The reason that I say that it's typically not as good is because RF is a one-way protocol (you can't read the state of the light or fan), and sometimes commands are not received by the fan. In my case, I know that the fan is to blame because the exact same behavior happens when using the remote that came with the fan. These two things combined make it harder for me to convince my significant other of the usefulness of this smart device.

Excellent device! I have mine placed centrally located in the house and it's able to control all 5 of my ceiling fans in all rooms with ceiling fans that have an RF remote control.
I hope this being on Clearance doesn't mean the cloud service is being discontinued like the ihome plugs 😔

Yes! Be careful with that it happened to me with the TCP lights and app. They clearanced it and discontinued the service disabling all remote functions.
