Please be aware that while this says it includes a "refill", that's the only cartridge that comes with the unit.

Yeah these things are great. Recently switched from the old butane ones to these rechargeable ones and it's nice to only worry about one refill instead of two plus they work in a bigger area. I'm in PA so our mosquitos aren't as bad as the south.

These are one of the very few mosquito repellents that actually work. thewirecutter heartily recommends them.

I've been debating this for camping trips and read good and bad with respect to whether it works or not. I was also considering the butane one because you can get generic refills for those. Can you buy generic refills for this unit?

Thanks. I'd be too stupid and believe "refill" for actually re-fill the cartridge. So correctly it should say 'come with one cartridge'.

Looks like there are 36-40 hour refills available from $17-20 each depending on package size.

I was looking at these but got concerned with a few of the reviews mentioning how you don't want to be using these things near or around food or while eating. Anyone have more insight on this?

After plenty of research I bought the 2-pack of the Thermacell Patio Shield a few days ago for $40. I decided against the rechargeable E-Series. This deal is for the 5.5 hour model and not the 9.0 hour model. If the deal was on the 9.0 hour model, I might have considered returning the Patio Shield 2-pack. I wanted a system I can setup and not have to tend to for as long as possible. Yes, the Patio Shield repellent mats have to be replaced every 4 hours, but the Max Life repellent mats last 12 hours! With using the Max Life mats, you have 12 hours where you don't have to worry about replacing consumables! Yes, the rechargeable E-Series has a cartridge you don't have to replace for 40 hours, but you have to recharge it every 5.5 or 9.0 hours.... Just my two cents. Cheers.

E-Series
5.5 Hour or 9.0 hour battery life depending on model
20ft Protection Zone
Single consumable to replace
Comes with 1x 12 hour cartridge
Replacement cartridges last 40 hours and cost about $15-20 per cartridge

Patio Shield
15ft Protection Zone
2 consumables to replace
Comes with 1x 12 hour fuel cartridges and 3x 4 hour repellent mats
Replacement max life kit gives you 48 hours (4x 12 hour fuel & 4x 12 hour repellent mats) for about $15-20

Wish I could use these but I'm wary since it's toxic for cats.

Ive heard people complain these dont work with any kind of wind? Typically mosquitos cant do much with wind and i assume anything significant enough to disperse this so it doesnt work would keep mosquitos away anyway. Anyone comment on this?
