I have a SoloStove Bonfire and after looking at this in store, I feel like it's as good of quality as the SS, possibly even a bit better, plus you get the spark arrestor screen and grill thing.
FYI these put out very little heat from below the top of the fire pit, thus your legs will be freezing if it's cold out, even if they're only inches away from the fire pit. But there are a lot of DIY ways of making a heat deflector to sit above the fire pit online.
Reviews are mixed on costco.com. Some complaints about vent holes and discoloration of pit after first burn. Not sure if that's an issue with the SS or not.

Discoloration is an issue w SS, usually around the top ring. That being said, if you get the bonfire during sale + 50 off 250 Amex + 50 off coupon for referral...you're better off with the original solo imo
My solo stove is also discolored after repeated use and the inevitable burnt rubber from shoes touching the sides.
What makes me want to get it is the slightly larger size and all the extras that come with it. The extra size would help with a lot of the firewood that comes around here. Store bought wood fits great in the bonfire but anything else you frequently have to cut down or ask them to cut it smaller than they normally do.
Alright, I'll join this conversation, cuz, why not!
So I have the Hotshot, picked it up from Costco a few weeks back while I was thinking of the Solo Stove, why did I pick this one up? Well, for $299 with all the items that it had, couldn't beat that price with a stick, even though I have put many sticks in there already!
The good:
Stainless Steel
Drum has good construction
Base included (Solo does not have it)
Includes accessories (cover, screen, grill, handle) which would be extra for solo
more or less easy to clean - ash goes into the grove and back down so maybe that's a con!
The bad:
I really believe that it's not as smokeless as it should be - I'm talking once it has been running for over an hour you can still see a lot of smoke. When you are moving hot embers you get that smoke sting in your eyes! Does the Solo work better than the HotShot? Maybe??
The cleaning of the ash is kinda crappy - turn it upside down and a lot of ash is caught in the channel, turn it again and again and again...I believe the solo would be different
The pit is deep so you need a very long stoker since the heat is...well, hot! I imagine that's the same with the Solo!
The quality of the mesh isn't the greatest
All in all, I think that since the solo has a sale right now I will get it and test side by side but more than likely return the hot shot!

Are you burning quality/ dry wood or just local stuff you find? If you're using good wood it definitely shouldn't be smoking after it gets hot. My parents have the biggest one (yukon or bonfire can't remember) and using cut dried wood it's smokeless after 15-20 min.
Still considering getting this one pending more reviews.
I have the Solo Bonfire. If you're using good wood (e.g. dry hardwood), then the thing is very hot and near-smokeless after 20-30 minutes. By near smokeless, I mean I can see some black smoke, but very little. Plus it burns hot enough that what little smoke there is tends to rise above folks sitting around it instead of blowing into people. I figure 80%-90% reduction in smoke vs. a regular firepit.
As for heat radiated to the sides, a lot of people say their legs get cold. I find the opposite: it is hot enough that we find ourselves backing away a little bit. You will absolutely melt your shoes and/or burn your skin if you touch the sides (though the bottom few inches stay reasonable). I think the difference between my experience and others is that I burn dry hardwood--and it is hot. Another nice thing if you burn hot: you don't have to mess with the wood...just drop it in and it catches on fire. No arranging, no poking, no fussing. This is a huge difference compared to a typical fire pit where you're constantly messing with the wood to keep it burning.
I bought this right after it was available at Costco. I have probably had 20 fires in it. So far, everything has held up. I did have a fire the night before a rainstorm, so my embers ended up getting soaked without the cover. the inner chamber has some slight signs of surface rust, but the outside is still in really good shape. I think it's pretty hard to go wrong for this price, and you get the awesome costco return policy, if needed.

I'm using local Avocado wood which is well seasoned. The review was about the Hotshot, not the Solo

Yes I understand your review was about the Hotshot. I was giving you perspective from someone who has used the Solos quite a bit, and expressing suprise the results would be so different considering the designs are nearly the same.

By far the best camping accessory I've bought.
The original solo is currently on sale at solo for $229
It's a 19.5 diameter
Without the extra mesh top
