After much searching and unsuccessful asking, I finally happened on a relevant discussion. It appears it's not possible to get 360 games via the old website, yet people keep posting links to those. I finally understood the reason for using the old website is apparently MS' poor implementation of getting free BC 360 games on the XB1 didn't give you non-Gold ownership if you did it through the new website. Of course I didn't know that and got most of my games that way because the old marketplace stopped working long ago.
I don't know if getting a 360 free with Gold game on a XB1 console gives you full rights, so to be sure you either have to get it via a 360 console, or use a XB1 console or the new marketplace and risk losing it when your Gold expires. Another reason I love MS so much.
