The 50 quart coleman cooler (and prob the 100 quart, and definitely many other brands of coolers with wheels) uses a terrible design for the wheels. The wheels are mounted by a long metal bar that sort of snaps in place to a molded in plastic clamp. It's not a matter of if, but when, it will fall out. You'll snap it back into place, but with each fall and resnap, it gets slightly looser and looser. It will become normal to load your ice chest and remember to grab the metal bar with 2 wheels on it and load that seperately with plans to snap it on when unloading. Such a PITA.

It would perform so much better if there were a way to seal that "axle" in place (glue or plastic welder maybe).

After dealing with it for an entire softball season and lots of heavy ice chest lifts into the back and lots of wheel fall offs, I now exclusively look for a better designed system when buying ice chests. You wouldn't think it is such a big deal, but a heavy ice chest with a leaning lift or leaning set down into the back of an suv... it only takes the wheels falling on your toe once to regret the purchase. I've hit my toes a few times and just load and unload it with the wheels off, wishing they were mounted better.

Coleman folding camp kitchen is down to $60.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00339912S

I had been watching it and it had been $100 and I almost bought a used one on marketplace for like $70. Sadly leaving for cub scout camp tomorrow so it won't make it on this trip, but good for the next one.

We store our 100qt full of stuff when not in use. Basically just make the cooler into a box. Storing it empty is a huge waste of space…just make sure it's fully dry inside!

Honestly never really thought of that. Except some of my smaller coolers are stored inside larger coolers. I guess for my big ones, they are in such an inconvenient storage location, if I needed anything that was stored inside of them, it would be a pain in the butt.

Thanks for the info on this. Went back and cancelled the 50 qt and ordered the 100 instead. Hope the wheels on that aren't an issue. Was also thrown off by cooler being black? WTF? Thank you OP for this head up as well….

Call me crazy but I would never trust a $25 cold weather sleeping bag. That's just asking for trouble.

I've had the same problem with the wheels falling off, but only one time I think as I don't use that cooler that often. I think the key thing here is that there aren't a ton of the bigger coolers with wheels in this price range. Most of the big white 100+ qt coolers do not have wheels at all.

Really wanted to jump on the coolers but the wheels comment above me is totally pushing me off.

So is this common across 'affordable' brands? Because I might have to just deal with it if it's gonna happen everywhere, might as well save some money on it
