If you have plex pass for the hardware transcoding this thing is a beast.

Many other options for same or less price with RAM, HDD and OS included. Check out the ETA Prime channel on Youtube. Guy reviews all of these mini/nuc computers that are out there. They have really come a long way.

Doesn't Plex pass give you the ability to transcode with a discrete graphics card? You can transcode with CPU without the pass. But yes, this will transcode just fine. I went from a Celeron G6600 which was just fine to an i7-7700 and noticed hardly any difference. This should do it with no issues at all.

You can't use the iris xe for transcoding without plex pass, which would be the entire point of buying this nuc for plex.

You need the Plex Pass to use the iGPU for hardware transcoding.

That's if you want serial and parallel ports and use jumpers to define the IRQ LMAO

Wish the free ram it came with was 2x8Gb, with 16Gb you almost have to buy another crucial stick to get dual channel performance.

This would be overkill for the price. Look at lower power units, like the Protectli Vaults. Ive been running one for years and its great.

Please note that while this thing is basically the ideal Plex transcoder, if you want to be able to do HDR tone mapping in hardware then you will need to use Linux on it. With that on, you could easily transcode a half dozen 4k h.265 HDR videos simultaneously.

It's honestly pretty amazing. It's because for some reason Intel decided to include it's highest end laptop iGPU in this NUC. This gives it way more graphics cores for hardware transcoding than any other Intel based desktop device.

I don't even think that's the case here. It's a weak cpu by todays standards. I understand the form factor but that's an only extreme case scenario this is even remotely and even then hardly a deal.

Please dual channel is overrated. This is a NUC not a screaming gaming or production PC.

As others said, it's overkill... but I like to overkill.

The 2.5 Gbps port is a plus... but 2.5 Gbps switches and smart switches are still a lot more $$$ than 1 Gbps ones.

I use an older NUC for pfSense and my 500/500 fiber connection. Only 1 ethernet port but I use VLANs and it has worked very well and has been very stable.

I used to want one of these until i realized, you can get a similar spec'd laptop for way cheaper, and it will come with display, ssd, ram.
