Yes you can move files directly. Most phones have a file manager app built in but if not or you don't like it you can download one of many of the free highly rated ones in the play store.

When you connect the hard drive sometimes it auto detects or on some phones it aak you what you are doing with the connection and moving files is one of the options. Then in file manager you can navigate your phones files but the external will be there too and you can easily move files or copy and paste both ways from either device.
Is there such a thing? And if so, are they available for around $5?
This seems like a really mediocre deal. I know inflation has been a pain, but I have some Aukey adapters from like 4 years ago that were $3 a piece, and I generally expect peripherals to just get cheaper.

These adapters are regularly 2/$9

I guess if you have ports that are close together, the longer cable might be nice, but even then, there are a million generic adapters around this price.

What exactly does this cable enable/allow to be done?

I have a Pixel 4a and it uses a USB-C cable, and I like to move/copy pictures from my phone, over to my external hard drive. And I do this, by connecting my phone and my external hard drive to my desktop computer. Would this cable actually allow me to directly hook up an external hard drive, or a USB flash drive, directly to my phone and, then, move/copy photos or other files from my phone over to the external hard drive or USB thumb drive?

If so, how exactly would that work? How would I navigate being able to copy/move the files from my phone over to the external hard drive? Do Android phones have a built-in option that would allow that to be done?

If someone knows an answer to any of these questions, if you would reply and offer some helpful feedback, it would be sincerely appreciated.

Thank you very much, for taking the time to reply to my comment and share the helpful feedback with me. I really appreciate it. I didn't even know that what you just described was a realistic option, so that's some good information to know. And for $5, this would definitely seem to be a great deal, on a potentially helpful item.

Prices are nearly identical to USB A drives.

https://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-12...B01EZ0X55C

You're going to pay more for a drive+adapter than just a USB-C drive. Bonus: this one allows you to connect to either A or C.

That's good if you don't have any drives. But if people have existing ones, SD cards with USB adapters or supported external hdds then this is pretty good.

Except these adapters open the door for so much more than just thumb drives.

For instance, if you wanted to directly record from a USB sound card or hook up a mouse and keyboard, this will allow that.

A thumb drive does one thing, store data. If that's your only need, sure. But you have to buy that particular thumb drive. If you had this you could use any USB thumb drive.

If you want to hook up anything else other than a thumb drive, you'll need this.
