First thing we did was seal the wood. This is not pressure treated wood. It's just stained. We added a coat of poly right away and that really helped it survive. Maybe 3 years later we re-stained and sealed the wood again with minwax and a layer of poly over it. That got us another 2 years or so before it was decided it had served its purpose.
I'm fairly handy and this took the better part of a weekend building it alone. My wife helped a bit here and there, but working essentially alone it took at least 10 hours to build. It really helps to use a drill/driver.
I added some cedar planks around the bottom under the deck to make the sandbox. The sides as they are don't allow for much sand. That was quite popular when they were really little. Later, we enclosed it and made a fort. Many Nerf dart battles were held and the fort proved worthy many times.
For the price, great Swing Set.
We live in San Diego, so we don't have crazy storms or huge winds for the most part. We do have lots of sun.

Weather exposure will always be a factor in longevity, too, so 5 years may be asking a lot if it's in direct sun/wind/rain/snow and you aren't willing or able to seal/paint it regularly. Of course, "heavy duty" play sets are also closer to $2000 and up.

Very critical all 4 stakes are driven into the ground deeply as instructions ask. With the hard dirt I have in Socal driving the stakes took as long as building the set unfortunately even with the help of much water.
But extremely happy with the results after assembly the kids love it. Incredible for the price.
