I have the Ego self-propelled for 1/3 of an acre. I can't do it all on one charge which is annoying. I used to only use it for the front yard because the back yard is uneven but with gas prices I'm now using for both. On uneven ground it has a tendancy to miss cutting some grass in the middle for some reason so I have to go over spots a few times and I'm worried it will wear it out sooner, but don't want to deal with the increased ethanol that the Biden admin authorized ruining my gas mowers (riding and push mower).
I saw a video review on the Ego and the comments said to lower the cutting height one notch to avoid missing center spots.

It would also help to sharpen the blades. I've noticed many lawnmower blades aren't sharpened all the way to the center. There's a 3-4" unsharpened gap on each blade in the center. Sharpening to the center should eliminate it, but even if you just sharpen the main section it will make a noticeable difference.

I've used the same blade for 10 yrs by sharpening them. Takes a few minutes at the beginning of each season, but it's best to sharpen them before each use. That's $250 worth of blades you're throwing away vs a file and a few minutes of time each mow. Plus the mower cuts way cleaner and more efficiently with sharp blades. Dull blades rip the grass instead of cutting them.

I use Smith's pull-through knife sharpener which is super quick & easy. Pull it along each blade a few times and done. Electric mowers are especially convenient for blade sharpening because they can be turned over without spilling noxious oil & gas all over the place.

Might have to give this a try. Thanks for the suggestion.

My friend has one of these and the battery life is terrible. Maybe he got a lemon.

Not worth my time, replacement blades are $25 and takes 5 minutes to install.
Sharpening mower blades is just something responsible adults do.

I have had an Ego mower for 4 years. The self propel died on it and customer service was great. My local repair place stopped working on EGO, so Ego just sent me a new mower. Not even a refurb, an actual new one.
I'm literally going through the same thing with mine. Unfortunately there is a repair place near me so I just have to take it in. Pretty good customer service but the self propelled speed control is a know issue that goes out, unfortunately.

I am not sure I understand the point you want your question to make. Is it that energy generation is inherently dirty? In the US, coal has been decreasing for a decade, renewable is increasing, and while we might still be burning petroleum, gas, or coal, we're not adding dirty capacity and 30% of capacity retired last year was coal capacity. By capacity, 70% planned in 2021 is wind and solar (16% natural gas, 11% batteries, 3% nuclear).

The electricity I use for my lawn mower can get cleaner and more efficient. The gas in a lawn mower can never get cleaner or more efficient. (Or not economically cleaner, there's only so much that can be done at a cost-reasonable level on a price-conscious consumer mower.)
The point is the sola, wind and batteries aren't actually cleaner.

Totally offtopic, but China and India won't end coal. They are increasing it. They mine 14 million tons a day and China added a new coal fired power plant each week all through the pandemic. Don't see why we need to make all the sacrifices when they do nothing. To the point of severe economic damage. This equipment is overly expensive as this thread has shown. Many cannot afford it. Sick of others getting a free pass all the time.
Well that settles it. The only reasonable action is to not even attempt to mitigate the effects of climate change...because China and India!

You lost me there. In what way would solar and wind not be cleaner than burning coal or oil? Do you mean in CO2 and other emissions or something else when you say clean?

I own one. The battery died after 9 months. I called them up they shipped me a brand new one free and with no fuss.

These mowers are great. And company backed it up.

It's actually the opposite - the more the US leaves coal, the cheaper coal gets due to decreased demand. That's why China has been building coal plants like mad.

If China doesn't cut back, it doesn't make sense for us to just make it cheaper for them to spew pollutants. Their plants aren't as clean as the ones here.

Thanks for your tips. I just got my Ego mower a couple of months ago and it's been great so far. I do want to keep my blades sharp and I have not done it before. I assume you definitely need to full remove the blades to properly sharpen them. Is this a timely/difficult process? Plan to pick up the sharpening tool that you recommended. Appreciate any insight you'd be willing to share.

The blade can stay attached to the mower when using the Smith's pull-through sharpener. Steady the blade with one hand and slide it across a few times. I use the coarse side til I feel the blade relatively sharp, then the fine ceramic side a few swipes to finish it off.

If the blade is very dull, it'd be worth it to remove it and give it a thorough sharpening with a grinder (or manually with a file). Once you get it sharp, maintaining it with the pull-through sharpener is quick & easy. Removing the blade is just a single bolt in the center.

Thanks a lot sir. I have used the mover about 8x so far. I'd like to keep the blade share so that it never really becomes dull and I need to remove it. With that in mind, how often would you recommend sharpening the blade?

How often do you recommend to use the sharpener? every 4 cuts? 8 cuts?

I don't think there's any rule. What I do is check the blades either after storing the mower or before mowing. I find that using a vise, a good file and go slow manually take minimal effort for a sharp edge. After you are done, you're supposed use the file to go over the edge to dull it a little as you don't want razor sharp edge due to chipping easily. This consistently does the job to keep the blade sharp. (I've tried power grinder but it can take off too much metal off).
