I have the $300 per year plan with 8GB data and I've been on the phone with customer service. They wont change my data to 16GB. I was on the phone with them 35min to argue. I asked for a supervisor and they hung up. I'm not giving up though.

Go check out US Mobile Pooled plan. Its $9 for unlimited talk/text and $2 a GB and you can add more as needed. So if they stay under 1 GB then its around $11.50. That runs on Verizon 5G network. Since it is hard capped if they turn off wifi by accident you are only out $2 if they blow through the gig. For smaller kids that can really be a help.

Technically speaking if you are only using it on wifi 100% you do not need a cellular plan. You can get a Google voice number and use that or FT you can contact via icloud email address. This is how it was done on the old ipods with no cellular modem
Thanks again for suggesting US Mobile. It was a bit of a hassle (mostly from Tracfone since my phone was unknowingly still locked), but I finally switched over to US Mobile.

I signed up for their most basic plan, which is unlimited talk and text for $8. No data.
No need for data now since my son only uses the phone at home or wherever there is WiFi.
Comes out to $12+ with tax each month.

For Facetime you want "data" to be reliable, so whichever carrier works best for that in your area. I made the mistake of switching from an AT&T MVNO; Freedompop (now Red Pocket), to Mint Mobile (T-Mobile MVNO). T-Mobile worked great for making calls and texting in my area, but "data" was always being deprioritized; making video calls almost imposible to make most of the time. Now back on AT&T, I'm having no issues whatsoever when streaming video. For some people it's the other way around. I also recommend Red Pocket, just choose the right carrier SIM (AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon).
Any reason to get a data plan if my son will only be using FaceTime where there is WiFi?

AT&T customer service is worthless! Trying to get a refund for the extra $25 they made me pay in order to port my number/create a new account that they had to "fund" before they could transfer the $300 from the temp number (don't ask....that was almost a full day struggle)

Called up this morning and played the transfer game from billing, back to CS, back to billing...back to CS, both of them in their broken language/understanding skills saying "only the other dept can process" I gave up after the 3rd transfer attempt and hung up and called my CC to dispute the charge. Never thought ATT would be such a nightmare to deal with or I would have never switched!

I have had a total nightmare with the switch to this plan to, and I've had quite a bit of experience with these types of things. I've been on the 8GM plan myself for a while and though I had a little bit of a hassle when I switched before nothing like this. They tried to charge me twice, paid the $300 Monday, Tuesday was told I still needed to pay to be active. . I am pretty sure the CS rep I spoke with first Tuesday really messed something up, I looked at my account that morning before calling (because service still wasn't working) and it showed $0 due and a $300 (positive) balance in the account, meaning for whatever reason the payment did not apply and activate the plan. After the call it showed $300 due and a $0 balance. I ended the call with that CS rep because she repeatedly said she had "no record" of my payment the day before and that the only way she could proceed was to charge my credit car. Funny that I called back 2 hours later and a different CS immediately said he could see my payment from the day before but couldn't figure out why it didn't activate the plan, He was able to finally get things to work but it took a while. It's so funny how you can speak to one CS and get no help and then the next can solve your problem, though I've had that same experience with many companies, tracfone and verizon were the same.
I'm Currenty on hold at this moment, been on the line with them for almost an hour (for the third time in 2 days), finally got everything activated yesterday but only the 8GB plan (yes I've asked and checked and it does not have/show an extra 8GB promo data). What they are now telling me the reason I only got 8GM is because I ported a number over, and its for "new" numbers only, makes no sense to me at all. I cant find anything in the terms and conditions that specifically state that you cant port a number and get the 16GB but also cant find anything that says you can. However when you order the plan online you literally select if your porting a number and what that number is.

UPDATE they are now saying that porting should work and be eligible (of course it should) and have opened another case. Taking a lot of work to get this right.

When you ordered the sim did you tick that you are bringing a number?

how to get eSim. When I add the plan to the cart, I always get the physical sim option only by default
You don't follow the same steps as the physical sim

Go back a couple of pages and a step by step instruction on how to activate directly on esim is explained

Search is your friend!

Activated the eSim route everything went fine ported number with port call center and number is showing but I can't make any calls or texts. Data is working. Be advise att prepaid support is not 24/7 nor is the porting call center. My T-Mobile account has already been cancelled and the port status was successful according to their website. Never had to wait this long for a port.
here is the esim route

You want at least 1GB of mobile data for "emergency" situations; maybe there's a power outage and the router goes down, maybe a public hotspot blocked FaceTime or the connection is congested, perhaps you want to track down your son and there's not a Wi-Fi connection close by, etc. A kid needs to have a reliable and strong Wi-Fi & Cellular signal at all times; if you don't trust him with data usage, most phones have some kind of "Kids Mode" you can activate to control what they use.

Yes I did, I debated it based on conflicting comments on here. Some saying to do new number, some saying they had no issue porting. When I did this myself about two years ago I had no issue at all with the number porting itself (I did however have an issue with activating the plan but it was quickly handled with a phone call).

The number port itself again this time seemed to go fine. I got messages saying the number was ported fine, the correct number was tied to the SIM that they sent to me, and showed up in my online account correctly. The issue seemed to be with activating the plan itself, although I go so confused with my multiple phone calls with them and all the conflicting things they've said I dont really know what happened lol.

FYI for what it's worth as I've obviously been told some incorrect things in my recent CS calls, the last CS I just spoke to told me this deal was only going through the end of this month (in response to me complaining that a previous CS told me the deal may no longer be available and that is why I didnt' get 16GB but it clearly still was on their website).

So you went the route of placing the order clicking to get a new number and then trying to port your existing number after you activated the plan/account?

yes correct! (little did I know at the time that porting from an ATT MVNO (red pocket) was going to be such a mess!) Their CS reps are pretty worthless, don't speak English well and give very conflicting info. I've spent many hours with this. Not worth the wasted time and stress....but is what it is now. The last part I just turned over to my CC to get the credit back and will live with the service for the next year and hope I don't ever have an issue that I have to contact support about Roll Eyes (Sarcastic)

and that's where you got in a vicious cycle

As per my many posts and recommendations I suggest you get a new number!! and then set up the new number and just call port activations to port over old number onto new number

Case in point I just set up an account from scratch for a friend and from setup to port it was less than 30 minutes and the port was instantaneous from tmobile to att prepaid!

My port finally went through it seem to take more than 3 hours, i went to bed and when I woke up service was online...
There is a post here that I followed, it wasn't exactly accurate, but I was able to make use of it. I have an iPhone 13 so you need to verify your phone supports eSim.

Used laptop for online eSIM activation:
AT&T Prepaid Activation Portal (att.com) [att.com]

You use this to put your eSim information at that portal

- Entered EID (last 4) and IMEI2 (On iPhone go to About it will display the information make sure your giving the eSIM information and not your regular sim)

Once you activate it, you have to go to setting then Cellular and accept the AT&T eSim activation. I left my t-mobile sim in while doing this.
Once its activated on the computer you select the 8GB X 2 plan and setup your AT&T account. At one point it asks for credit card information. Once its setup and you have a "temp number"
THEN you call ATT port dept @ 888-898-7685
Since I came from T-mobile you have to use the T-mobile app on my iPhone to generate a port out pin. The guy on the phone helped me with this. Once its complete the call disconnected and i rebooted my phone and the number changed data worked but it took most of the night for the port to complete
The $300 plan came to $330 not sure if they charged me an activation fee I can't view the details , didn't bother with gift cards too much hassle

I ran a speed test and I'm getting 115 Mbit down indoors on 5GE so i'm pretty satisfied (Don't run a lot of these they take a lot of data)
