There are many MNVOs (BoostMobile, Visible, HelloMobile) providing $25/m unlimited everything plan (HelloMobile's plans also include free international calls to many countries), why would we choose this limited data plan? Just because it is AT&T?

Aren't prioritization on those MVNOs much lower than att prepaid?

Also, you still have data after 16Gb it's just slower. All unlimited plans can drop your speeds after some amount of usage. Not sure how the slow speeds compare between carriers. This plan also has 1 month rollover so if you aren't using all of the data every month then you will have more than 16gb.

I don't need unlimited data. I need network prioritization and low latency. I've tried a number of MVNOs and in my area the only prepaid that delivers is ATT.

Just to add what others have noted re 5G and it not being possible on this plan, note that with ANY plan that's on AT&T proper you cannot get 5G coverage with an unlocked/BYOD device (confirmed by CSR a few days ago). I'm currently in the process of migrating off of AT&T due to coverage issues in Madison, WI, the 5G BS, and the insane prices we've been paying.

Moving to Google Fi and we're looking at $20/line for their Simply Unlimited plan with 4 lines.
so thats why i only get 5gE? what bs.. but then again, 5G usually causes disruptions as the phone is always switching back and forth due to spotty coverage. LTE is fast enough for me.

Yup, doing myself first. Screwing up the wifes phone is not a good look.

As a current postpaid AT&T customer I plan to do this deal later today or tomorrow per the detailed instructions (thanks very much for those).

As for porting to TMo to be considered a new prepaid customer, would I be able to go the Metro by TMo route (https://slickdeals.net/share/iphone_app/fp/733228) so I could get one of the free/cheap phones when signing up for a $40 plan? Plan to use the drawer method until day 181.
How did the process work out for you as a Postpaid ATT customer?

I ended up getting cold feet since my post didn't get a response; instead followed instructions with the $10 TMo prepaid plan and have encountered the hassle I've gotten used to in getting all these 'good deals'. The TMo store rep apparently left off the first digit of my AT&T account for starters. Then I had the whole AT&T fraud alert on my account to work around. Now one number on my 2-line postpaid account has been transferred successfully to prepaid, but the other number is still showing 'can't be transferred' on the site even though I successfully ported to TMo about 24 hours ago. I'm not sure if it's because I had an amount due (paid off earlier this evening) and I just need to wait it out a few more hours, but I'd welcome any insight into why I'm getting this message still and how to get my number out of AT&Ts system so I can finish this process.

order a sim with this new plan as a new customer

when you get the new sim activate it with a new number same market as old number

port your old number to tmobile

same day call 1888 port activations and port that newly ported tmobile number onto new number

Hearing mixed stories. If I don't port the old number to another carrier first (I'm looking at moving temporarily to Visible since they support e-sim and have a 15-day trial), does it FUBAR the whole thing?

You can port the old number out before or after creating the new att account/number using the new sim.

Porting out and then back in is required since you can't convert from a current ATT plan to this $300 plan.

Got it. Old AT&T shenanigans it looks like. I'll probably port into the new plan in about a couple weeks during a day off. Maybe wake up earlier in the day just to give myself a few hours of buffer time in case something goes south.

and why would you not buy gift cards to fill up your balance before renewal?

That's your mistake
