I had a 12000 btu installed about 3 months ago and it freezes on the inside unit occasionally. Any ideas? Local hvac said I was lookin at $350 for him to come and "probably fix it"
Blocked filter, blocked coils, or low on refrigerant.

$350 for a service call is hilarious. call around but just a FYI most won't waste their time with these types of units which are rarely if ever worth performing anything more than a basic repair (if you can even get parts).

if the room these are going in have an exterior wall I have found that installing a wall sleeve and a good quality through the wall unit A/C is the way to go from a long term reliability standpoint. I have rentals using the same wall AC I installed in 2011 with only maintenance cleaning filter and spraying self rinsing coil cleaner once every 2 yrs. I know wall ACs are more noisy, but they make some decently quiet models now (Friedrich makes some) and they have heat pump too. obviously if room doesn't have exterior wall then it's a no go, and of course many don't want to make a 16"x26" opening in the wall and would rather just drill a hole for a lineset

I apologize. I'm an electrician. The 208 will greatly reduce your energy bill because it uses less amps. Same price and uses less on the monthly bill
This is absolutely not true for most cases. Usage is billed by kWh, not kAh.

The utilities aren't that dense.

How hard are these to install?
It's a process depending where you are installing. Took me a week getting it fully installed in our second floor master. I took my time and did a lot of research. I opted to pressure and vacuum test the unit, then performed a triple evac before releasing the freon. Thankfully I had a friend who handled the electrical. We love ours. Central AC goes to 76 at night and we set our mini split to 62 and sleep good

Says only available with purchase of equipment. The fittings might be special (probably are, to keep the line set sealed).

You can probably find an AC tech who will come vacuum test your lines and release the charge for not much if you do all the installation. That part's like 30 minutes most of which is waiting on the pressure test to make sure nothing's leaking. Call it an hour to get out the equipment and go over your work. Or as someone said above you can borrow/rent a vacuum pump from an auto parts store, maybe gauges too if you don't want to buy those.

Can any A/C pro explain if BTU's from one of these mini-split systems are comparable to the BTU's listed for standard window units?

E.g.
Is a new inverter based 9,000 BTU window unit going to perform on par with this 9,000 BTU mini-split?

Anything else, other than installation considerations, that helps distinguish them from one another?

Thanks!
A BTU is a BTU. If the same rating is on both the performance should be the same. SEER rating is the efficiency of the unit and the higher the better. That's why SDs hates the portable units that are single hose. They will still do the same BTUs as a window unit but they're much less efficient in doing so. BTU think of the size of the area it can cool or heat and SEER rating being how efficiently it can accomplish that task.

*sigh* I really hate this website sometimes.

In for one. Building a basement office and this will do nicely to keep the temps just right in there. It's oversized for the size of the room but 9k BTU seems to be the smallest you can go. I'll just have to keep an eye on how long it runs to avoid short cycling it.
Mitsubishi makes a 6k. But you're paying Mitsubishi money for that, meaning $1700 or so.

Windows units will less efficient than split and windows units are really noisy. At this price I would just get the split.

No. Needs a dedicated circuit with a 25A breaker. It draws 17A. https://www.pdhvac.com/site/downl...9-2020.pdf

Edit: direct link doesn't work, check "Technical Brochure" on manufacturer's page: https://www.pioneerminisplit.com/...mp-115-vac
