I already purchased the first month's service (there was no option to decline it) but hoping there'd be a way to cancel to avoid renewal for the 2nd month.

You don't need to do anything to cancel it since it's a prepaid phone … you can just let the plan expire and your account will still be there if you want to re-activate again later. They won't try to charge you anything unless you sign up for auto-refill.
