6600XT/6650XT are the better 1080p/1440p options for sure.
Edit: When Nvidia set MSRP, component cost (VRM, PCB, Ports, VRAM, etc) was a bit cheaper. I think this will be the normal pricing unless supply exceeds demand (or RTX40 successor phases it out in a few months).
It's not like FE models where theres contracts between nvidia + bestbuy for a set price.. 3060 never had an FE model. Lowest market/AIB card will dictate cost.
Anyone who got a 3060 early for "MSRP", didn't even pay MSRP. Shipping cost was an additional $10-20 from EVGA/Newegg/Zotac.
ASUS/MSI/GIGA never sold "$329" models on release. Just left placeholders on Newegg and stocked OC models for $499. Was obvious as hell.
In hindsight, 6 GB 3060s wouldn't have had a problem selling, but I feel like NVIDIA wanted leverage incase game devs went crazy on textures/VRAM. 60 series was always a "do everything" kinda GPU.
The 3050 that was released later on is also 128 bit... which means 4GB (1GB density) or 8GB (2GB density) are the only options in the VRAM department.. so yeah.
3070 had a planned 16GB SKU (2GB density like 3060), but it got scrapped.
Pretty sure same was true for higher tier cards like the 3080 which actually got upgraded to 384 bit + 12GB (from 320 bit +10GB). Also had a few more SM's enabled to match bit rate config.
Next gen 4060 and 4070 are projected to share 192 bit + 12GB configs.

Probably would have been just as disappointing with 6 GB.

Currently the MSI Aero ITX RTX 3060s are still overpriced and out of stock.
