They removed the backup at original quality (except for the OG 2016 Pixels). Backup at storage saver (compressed quality) is available for life for the Pixel 2 - 5, but not for any newer Pixels after that.

6a is definitely not a slam dunk winner over 5. 6a has the better chip and more updates, but 5 has better screen, fingerprint reader, wireless charging, more RAM, better display, unlimited photo backup, lighter weight and IMO better better form factor/size.

Pixel 4 at $249 seems like a pretty sweet deal. Its still a pretty powerful phone, especially if you dont need 5g.

I sold my pixel 5 for pixel 6, big mistake ever. i hate the finger print on p5 and miss face unlock on p4/4xl
Pixel 5 is still a solid phone and only issues is lagging sometime.

That's the $64 question. I have read the comments and it looks like a mixed bag of opinions. I suggest you look them over. You can wait for more input but they will sell out if you wait too long. I am considering the 5 (currently have the 6). I let my 5a go because no wireless charging. The good news is when updates expire, they all have an unlockable bootloader. I have no experience hacking, but can follow directions.

I like having a cheap backup phone laying around and the 4a looks decent. I grabbed the Pixel 2 XL for $150.00 and didn't like it and just picked up a Moto One Ace 5G. The Ace is pretty good but it's ginormous. How's the 4a's real world battery life and is the speakerphone any good?????
