The issue you had of only getting a 169 ip address means you were getting a ARPA address, so that usually points to your modem not talking to your router anymore. Also could indicate a temporary service area issue for your ISP. If that was true you would have not had working wireless either so that cant be right. You might have just got a dud router, but overall I would have tried a replacement unit cause your problem is not very common at all looking at reviews. Noone complained of your issues from the costco reviews taht I could see, only issue I could find with any common place was signal drop issue but that could also be an environmental problem.
That all being said I would have not downgraded myself and spent more money on outdated tech, I would have tried a replacement before shifting over to a completely different brand like Asus if the replacement didnt work out. Spending $70 on lower end wifi 5 gear this late in the game is a waste of money. Just my two cents, but I got many many years of networking behind that two cents.
Here's a discussion I was referring to:

A couple other related cases involving no wired connections but wifi is OK.

If you decide to exchange and go for another one, make sure you update to the latest firmware right off the bat and also make sure your router along with your modem are on a proper surge protector. We have had big storms here recently so power has flickered and browned out many times, luckily I got stuff on battery backups so only the lights would flicker and equipment would be fine. Modem and Router equipment very sensitive to electrical fluctuations, also a well ventilated area is important too.

Just to add to this, I primarily have used for a few days at a time the X20/X21 X50 and almost all the DECO's at one time or another, never the wifi 5 stuff cause primarily I was a Asus and Netgear user than, and in all the time I have playied around with TP-Link stuff never had the above problem.
Disclaimer, I don't have these routers so I don't know for sure if these things support WDS, my hunch is that they should. However, someone else who has these can chime in. Just use one of the 5GHz bands as the WDS Station and don't connect any of your devices to that SSDI (and Hide the SSID's) and use the 2.4GHz and the other 5GHz band to connect your devices.
Also get the 1 2.5Gbps WAN/LAN and a second 1Gbps WAN/LAN which is great for NAS boxes and people who have 1Gbps fiber ISP.
Now if when you said AX3000, but you really meant the X50 model TP-Link the gap closes to about half of those numbers so a lot less of an upgrade.
Overall though if your happy with what you currently have unless you plan to utilize the 2.5Gbps port you can probably hold off on upgrading cause this router has been around this price a lot and will probably continue to be so no rush.
* I bought 2 TP-Link routers. They cannot work together as a mesh network, but I can setup router 2 as a wireless bridge.
* I checked TP-Link website. TPL mesh router can pair with TPL mesh extenders, but it cannot pair with another TPL mesh router.
* Instead, please consider Asus brand for the scalability to pair 2 or more routers as a mesh network. Hope my answer helps.
