just get the heatsink version, only 20 bucks more, same coupon code applies

3rd party one on amazon will cost like 12 bucks anyway.

Would this have any small benefit [possibly under heavy load] even if your PC only supports PCIE Gen 3?

No. It will be capped to PCIE Gen 3 speeds regardless.

what are common issues with these that don't have heatsinks? Will Windows log thermal event issues?

I don't use hesr sink on my gaming desktop PC here. Never a problem ( I have very good air flow with 7 fans on my desktop PC)

But if using on laptop or ps5,you absolutely must get heatsink.
On my PS5 I use the official version .
On my gaming laptop, I use the one from Amazon ( at that time heat sink version was pricy AF)

This isn't true. Digital Foundry even did tests for a few weeks, no issues lacking a heatsink for ps5. But of course they're super cheap, so sure, why not go for one anyway.
