You are correct. Need additional power instead of power through USB.

From my brief research, this likely contains Seagate Barracuda ST8000DM004, an SMR drive. Yuck. Not even at this price unfortunately for me. Maybe if your use case doesn't mind SMR drives.

I grabbed one of these last time they were on sale for the purpose of a seldom-used "cold storage" backup drive. Seems good enough for that use case.

is this a desktop hard drive? does it draw power directly from a power outlet? or does it draw power from the PSU via USB? what's the difference between an external hard drive vs a GAMING HUB external hard drive anyway?

I purchased this the last time it was listed here. In the beginning, it worked well. Now it is slow to do anything. It takes a while to start up when I try to retrieve a file. When I attempt to save a file, its almost as if windows freezes when trying to write to the drive.

It comes with a separate adaptor. Compare to a regular external HDD, this one comes with a usb hub and it also has RGB light.
