    True story... In 1942 a pharmacist mate in a submerged submarine did an appendectomy using a book like this, despite never having held a scalpel before. Patient lived, only to disappear in another sub 2 years later. His book was paper of course.

    There is also an earlier edition available to download for free at various websites -
