Oddly enough, this happens with an outlet I have that has built-in USB A and C ports. It's like they don't like coordinating with each other or something.
Also, anytime this charger comes up, I feel the need to mention that there are certain slide-on travel adapters (EU etc) you can find that will slide onto the AC prongs while they are folded.

This just happened to mine (purchased December 2022; sparked in May 2023).
Charging an iPhone & Apple Watch (nowhere near 100W) and it made a loud pop and started smoking. Ran to unplug. Thank goodness I was awake, as I had this next to my bed.
Not a safe deal, my dudes. We aren't the only ones. Someone on Monoprice wrote almost the exact thing:
Not only did this die within 6 months, it went out with a loud pop and started emitting tons of smoke! Burned to the touch when I ran to unplug it from the outlet. I hate to think what could've happened had I not been home at the time.
