Can anyone comment on what 1x drivetrain would work on this? Would the sram sx or Shimano deore work? If this is freewheel does that make that impossible?

You could upgrade to either of those but using the cassette it would require a new rear hub or wheel that is compatible with the drivetrain as this bike uses a freewheel.

If you just want a 1x crank you would only have to change the crankset.

I wish they would size these based on stand-over height. That's an easy thing to figure out when buying a bike online, sight unseen. They have 5-6 as the minimum height for this size 20" frame. There's no way someone 5-6 could stand over this top bar with feet flat on the ground.

Could you measure it? Can't find any info on bar width on this bike. Wide bars and short stems are in for MTB. Most folks run 700mm+ bars for better control. If you shorten that long stem down to < 45mm (I linked one in this thread), might help with your reach to the grips.

What the other guy said. If you yank out the left shifter and front derailleur, and keep the chain in the middle chainring, you technically have a 1x without spending a dime. But that is not how most people define a modern 1x MTB. A typical 1x budget setup on a 29'er is 1x10 -- 30t narrow/wide chainring up front, 11-42t HG cassette in the rear, and clutched rear derailleur. On my daily budget 27.5 MTB, I run 1x11 -- 34t oval chainring, 11-42t cassette, non-clutched budget derailleur. No chain drops and no issues climbing the steepest hills on my local green trails. I wrapped the chainstay to protect it from chain slaps.

On this bike, to do a 1x conversion like above, you would need to upgrade the rear to freehub, and upgrade the crankset as the 3 chainrings on the stock crankset are riveted together. On a tight budget and knowing where to shop, you could get a rear freehub wheel, 1x10 cassette, hollow crankset, narrow/wide chainring, non-clutched rear derailleur, shifter and chain all for < $250 brand new. Of course you would need all the right tools for this job if you plan on DIY.

Handlebars are 29" wide. And it's a straight bar. The bike I've been riding the last couple years has 24" wide handlebar that has the more traditional mountain bike handlebar bends/angles.
This bike has a stand over height of around 31". My other bike is 29". IF I were to keep this bike I'd probably try 27.5 wheels so my junk is in less danger from that top bar. Lol.

I'm not the person you are replying to but holy moly do I not understand anything you just said. I hope I didn't buy too much bike... I was hoping to just put this thing together for some simple dirt roads, gravel, and pavement.

Thanks for measuring! 29" is about 740mm, which is very typical width for modern mountain bikes. You can check all the name brand bikes on the web like Trek, Giant, Santa Cruz...etc and their mountain bikes would all have bars > 700mm. It is the current norm for MTB. Of course this is personal preference and no one needs to conform to the current norm. But keep that bar in case you want to sell the bike. Folks would look for wider bars on MTB.

Can anybody from the bike pros here or somebody that has this bike recommend a good kickstand that will fit. My 18" frame does not have a center-mounted plate for one and there is a cable running thru the opening.

Anybody help adjust brakes? I was able to center easily so it wouldn't rub, but it doesn't grip hard enough and I'm unsure how/if it adjusts. Everything I'm finding online regarding hydraulic brake adjustments is about centering the caliper. Thanks!

Mine arrived yesterday and I immediately swapped out the rims for Enve carbon with full SRAM XX1 1x groupset, and Fox 36 factory fork, carbon bar and seatpost, and Maxxis DHF/DHR tires.
