Adding a NVME SSD is almost the first thing you need to do with this machine.

There's an empty M.2 slot, which can accept a 2280 form factor "gumstick" NVME SSD (but not a SATA M.2). Spend $40 more to get one & make it as the system drive. It will greatly improve the performance of this laptop.

The 1TB "old" HDD could be kept and used as media storage…

You don't need to. License is linked to bios. So just switch drive and reload windows.

Does anyone know if this laptop's audio driver includes the Stereo Mix virtual device?

When I walk into a best buy and see one specific laptop model with a large number of units being sold as used or refurbished, you wonder why so many people are returning that model and what is wrong with it. Doesn't anyone wonder why they have over 1700 refurbished of this specific model?

Because it was stupid to have an old-fashioned hard drive as the sole boot option making it slower than a stuck pig?

Mine had a small chip on the chassis, otherwise appeared new.

The mechanical hd is inappropriate these days. Just way too slow. Also, they really cheaped out on the wifi. Rtl8821 is quite weak being 1x1 and old. No ethernet, no usb 3.2 gen 2 (10gbps), no video through usb c. Relatively dim display.

My drive had 68 hours of run time. Also, the drive uses shingled magnetic recording. This slows down the drive even further. Then they went cheap with the ram. Normally it's preferred to use matched capacity modules so dual channel works. Here they're mismatched.

Lots and lots of corners cut. Maybe these were to be distributed to schools when they realized it wouldn't serve the purpose well. Who knows.

Please note:
This model is a good unit(especially with M.2 SSD) , but is infamous for a missing Num Lock indicator.

That's right - - HP chose to provide NO indicator to tell you if the Num Lock is on or off.

There is a generic HP app that will give you an onscreen display to resolve this glaring design oversight

I highly doubt they are from schools, I work in a school and almost all of them either give out chromebooks or ipads. Virtually no schools give out windows pc's and those that do give out low end ones (celeron processors).

I also doubt the mechanical hard drive is why people are returning these - the average person who buys a computer wouldn't know the difference between an SSD or a mechanical unless they are doing gaming or graphics. I can't imagine that is the reason people are returning these.

Is this drive one that is compatible with this laptop?

Yes, the majority of people won't know the difference in a technical sense but they will feel the difference in load times, posts here have stated about 3.5 minutes to bootup using the hdd, opening files…etc will all slower.

Without an upgrade this computer will feel slower in general day to day tasks than most computers/chrome books released in the past few years with small capacity ssds. The technical unsavy may not know that the cpu is faster for computations/work/gaming if the time to do everything else I is a downgrade.

I'm using the 1TB EVO 980 and it works. After using both the spinner and SSD with light use, it's easy to see how frustratingly slow the spinner makes this machine. It's almost unbearable, like a 10 yr old machine. The SSD brings it to life.
I did have a strange problem trying to boot from the SSD. The machine always wanted to use the spinner and wouldn't let me choose. I disconnected the spinner, booted from SSD and from that point forward it prefers to boot to the SSD.

Same part number, comes with win11 already installed. Probably not by Vlad.

Paying for the newegg name (which, is somewhat worthless if you follow the videos from gamer's nexus). Go for this one and install win11 yourself if you want it.
