Adding a NVME SSD is almost the first thing you need to do with this machine.

There's an empty M.2 slot, which can accept a 2280 form factor "gumstick" NVME SSD (but not a SATA M.2). Spend $40 more to get one & make it as the system drive. It will greatly improve the performance of this laptop.

The 1TB "old" HDD could be kept and used as media storage…

You don't need to. License is linked to bios. So just switch drive and reload windows.

A 17" laptop does not cost $1200+... As others have referenced, there is one at Costco for $500 and a couple at Staples for $529.

Still think this is the best deal for $349
Most people don't need to change the hard drive.
That's generally for people whom view, edit, store, create videos or music on their hard drive.
Most people just stream on the browser.

Think I will add a new hard drive, plus I'll have a ton of storage. And still spend under $500
The Bluetooth and other components do not need to be updated. If you set up you're gear accordingly or use adequate electronics you won't encounter any connection problems.

Wifi I see 100 up and down and after windows 11 updates on normal use. What issues you are seeing with wifi or network in this laptop?

I have bought two of these and everything is very slow! The windows of any application take a long time to load and freeze, on both units!!! What can I do? One is for my father, but I can't give it to him like that.

Did you invest the $40 and extra time to put in a compatible NVMe drive? There were a bunch of discussions about how slow this would be with a 5400rpm spinning drive as the sole boot device.

Heads up to the thread that I had a good experience with this laptop.

The laptop has no apparent blemishes. I installed a NVME SSD (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08V7GT6F3). Downloaded Win11 to an USB Stick. Downloaded Intel Storage Drivers onto USB. Used F10 to load BIOS menu. Set to boot from USB. Loaded Intel Drivers. Deleted all partitions. Installed Win 11 to NVME SSD. Ran Windows update and Intel Support Assistant.

Everything appears to be working.

Laptop is cheap, but nice. Compared to my other laptops (more $$$), I miss the fingerprint reader; extra USBs and a Display Port. The display is nice.
Can't find WiFi driver which one to install .

You can get it from Realtek (the company that made the networking hardware in this laptop):

Not a fair comparison. The HP is a stripped down, basic, bottom-tier laptop EXCEPT for the 17" display. Yes, it's only $350 dollars, but realistically you'll have to put another $120-150 into it to upgrade the hard drive and ram to make it usable for anything except reading your church's newsletter.

The Gateway is a mid-tier laptop that comes with a ssd already installed, more ram, better networking hardware and a fingerprint scanner BUT only a 14" display.

A fair comparison for this laptop would be Lenovo Legion deal. Also a 17" display, but for the extra $250 you're getting:

A slightly better display (300 nits vs 250)
Pre-installed ssd for those squirmish about installing and reimaging.
Better networking (Wi-Fi 6 11ax, 2x2 + BT5.1 vs Realtek RTL8821CE-M 802.11a/b/g/n/ac (1x1) Wi-Fi® and Bluetooth® 4.2 combo)
Better graphics card (can run games at medium settings vs. not a gaming GPU)
Better keyboard (also backlit)
Ports galore:

3x USB 3.2 Gen 1
1x USB 3.2 Gen 1 (Always On)
1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (support data transfer and DisplayPort 1.4)
1x USB-C 3.2 Gen 2 (support data transfer, Power Delivery and DisplayPort 1.4)
1x HDMI 2.1
1x Card reader
1x Ethernet (RJ-45)
1x Headphone / microphone combo jack (3.5mm)
1x Power connector

It's a common complaint against HP and the Zephyrus G14, I've owned them before and it's a stupid design.

I find that letters go invisible in many situations when backlight is on - I've never owned a backlit keyboard before and I mostly can touch type but it sucks to not be able to see the designation of each key when I'm doing something complex like a password with capital letters and symbols.

The main issue for me was wifi speed dropping significantly once I turned on Bluetooth. It showed in the speed tests as well as regular usage, for example a 50+ minutes long 1080p video on YouTube would keep stopping and loading with Bluetooth headphones connected and then after turning off Bluetooth it would load much faster.

I've tried fresh install of both windows 10 and 11 as well as the drivers without success. Finally gave up and started a return. Liked everything else except regular hdd which is an easy fix so not too happy about spending all this time troubleshooting then returning it.

WiFi alone performed just fine - I have 300mbps FIOS and reached 290 on the download and 150 on the upload. I guess the issue is specific to running bluetooth and wifi together.
