Know that this is not the same as the highly regarded Asus RT-86U. This is the RT-86S(stripped down) USB 2.0, less ram, weaker processor, and I think can't do mesh

This is the description - "Dual Band Gigabit Wireless Internet Router, up to 2500 sq ft, Lifetime Free Internet Security, Mesh WiFi Support, Gaming Port, True 2 Gbps"

It also have a USB 3.0 port right next to the USB 2.0 port.

There is a difference, they are described below and they are important ones!:

No 2.5Gbps port and slower processor. It is a lower model than the RT-AX86U. Having said that, it is a fair price for this model.

It's a 4096 instead of 4908. Same 2016 28nm A53 Broadcom processor with 2 less cores (disabled). Still better than the "Tricore" (Not really a tri core) A7 SoCs BCM sells for lower end stuff.

USB2.0 is due to removal of an extra controller (2.5G + 3.0) added to the regular AX86U.

Can do mesh. No reason it can't.

Other than that, this price is prob the new norm. Too many competitive routers selling @ pre pandemic prices.

$199 is fair. Just be aware Broadcom released second gen AX hardware (throughput advantages) and newer updated CPUs on TSMC 16nm.

Not sure if I would say slower, but it will bottleneck quicker with heavy use.

Doubt the average household with 20-40 concurrent clients could even tell a difference.

Biggest real world difference is the 2.5G port. (for faster connections and or NAS).

The Zaku edition for $238 is the better investment for the better specs.

Can't recommend anything but mesh at this price point.. never buying a single router again, ever

Unless under $100 and hackable so I can log into vpn to stream from another country

Eero Pro has me spoiled with its performance
You have no idea what you are talking about.

Asus standalone routers can be put into Mesh mode (Aimesh) when add additional standalone-routers. (i.e. often when you upgrade).

Plus, most dedicated mesh routers are built for ease-of-use/convenience/coverage, not for speed.

Yeah 2 mid-high end 4x4 routers in wired backhaul pretty much beats out any type of dedicated mesh units due to power output advantages (full 1w unii1/3 and actual antennas).

I'm not a fan of hopping the signal to other nodes, but tri band in wireless backhaul would be the easiest alternative if you cant wire a lan cable through the house.

The hardware of ax86s is pretty similar to ax68u, basically the only diff is the 5g RF (ax86s is 4x4 with bcm43684 and ax68u is 3x3 with bcm6710). So why not buying a ax68u at $150?

ax68U is missing the 4x4 BCM4384. it's a stronger radio overall, granted gen 2 hardware (BCM6715) kinda destroys it for AX performance
