Why spend over $200 on that Orbi when I already have an existing Asus router that I can make a mesh with this AX86S? Plus Asus will likely support their router with firmware updates longer than Netgear will for Orbi. And Merlin support for the Asus might make it even longer.

I don't even think AX86S is supported by Merlin, only the AX86U.
