Meh, the Fire HD 8 32GB was the same price from Woot a couple months ago.

This is way better than the $50 generic android tablet that I never used around 2015.

Big thread on SD about how you could hack that ancient junk to "function properly" and I got suckered into trying it. It rests in the bin of shame with the eepc and other dead electronics and that is where this would end up if I was going to waste $30 on something with a small screen and less power than my phone.

Hacking the Fire Tablet to not be annoying and slow is not worth your time imo. You can get a 15" ips touchscreen Acer 315 for $110 right now or much better tablet for around $50 when on sale.

I got my son one of those 8" ONN Walmart tablets and it's been pretty nice. Handles all his games flawlessly.

Unfortunately, that's just one more thing to keep up with. Now that nearly every device we have uses USB-C, we've been in the car several times and realized we can't charge the youngest kids tablet. Also, I've had several of these that the micro-usb port broke or got loose.

Not a big deal, I just feel like we're one or two sale cycles away from the usb-c equipped models being close to this price.
I solved this problem buy buying these multi-connector cables [amazon.com], it means I always have the right charging cable in my car, even if my passenger has an iPhone.

Ask yourself this, "Is the money I save worth the time I waste with the lag that these things have?"

You will always make more money. Well, probably. I don't know you, but it's likely you will make more money in your lifetime. You will never get your time back, though. These are so slow.
Meanwhile a bunch of people spend a ton of time on deal sites browsing and buying stuff they don't need and any number of other tech mediated activities that waste their time.

I saw a quote the other days that says something to the effect of if you came to realize you're caught on a treadmill you get off of it, you don't make it faster or deal with it on the level of its speed. Yes, meanwhile I'm posting this here.

Because there's a difference between hardware and software. Some people go so far as to root and don't use the Fire operating system.

E-waste
This is an OLD model. Superseded by a newer one. It's ALREADY E-WASTE. IT WILL BE E-WASTE forever because it's already been built. They aren't making it anymore. You solution seems to be throw this one away so a new model can be made and bought? Resulting in 2 E-waste products? How progressive. If Amazon sends them to a recycling company and you don't hear about it, that's better? Because that's what is going to happen to them the longer they sit.

If you are in market for something like this, you are actually doing the world a favor by buying this one as opposed to it's replacement.
SMH.

Yes, it would actually be better if Amazon sent them back to be recycled because the vast majority of consumers will throw this into a land fill. Not buying is the better option so that Amazon does not see demand for this junk and discontinues production of future low-quality tablets. It's already made, so I'll buy it is not the right attitude.

Anyone try to flash Android onto these things and use them for small projects that require a display?

I had a 2019 7" fire tablet, it was so slow at literally everything that I couldn't use it at all. The 2020 model is leaps and bounds better.

Go for the 32gb version for $3.00 more?

Thinking of just using this as a remote device for all the home/tv items.
For anyone thinking of using as this as a remote don't do it. This thing is incredibly slow and many aps that I use on my phone to control my AV equipment is not available to be used on this thing.

I got this and agree it was slow. I was going to return it, but instead realized I got more for trade-in toward the HD 10 (they gave me $50 vs the original $33 + tax that I had paid). The HD 10 has 3GB of RAM (vs 1GB here) and runs much more smoothly.
