I've had a Lodge enameled cast iron dutch oven for about 10 years now, paid $40 for it. Looks like it will go a few more decades, no enamel damage yet. What makes this one be worth 6 times more?

I wish some of the other colors were available at this price. It's always the red one on sale at this price.

Have this same one. Going on 5 years. It's still a baby. But I love it. Gorgeous color too.

Better track record for longevity, really good warranty, they will replace it even from obvious abuse, no questionable potential heavy metal poisoning issues from the enamel they use, it's made in a western country, lighter weight for same volume but just as good heat retention on the cooking surface. Lodge's enameled stuff is made in China, and several Chinese made enameled dutch ovens have had cadmium and arsenic leaching issues.

I personally would not touch Chinese made cookware. This stuff is a once in a life time purchase, so yes your $40 lodge is cheaper, but $210 saved over 10 years is hardly worth mentioning.

$250 is a great price, compared to the usual price, but I think it's even better to just buy a second hand one for around $100. Le Creuset has agreed to warranty replace some of the second hand stuff I bought with finish wear and tear and abuse. Ended up with brand new cookware, for the second hand price.

If you don't think it's worth more, you would be right! And if someone else DOES think it is worth more, they are also right!

Is it 6x the quality? Probably not, but for something that is almost guaranteed to last 10 years, and likely decades, the price difference is a drop in the bucket.

This is completely wrong. Maybe true for some completely random off brand Chinese company, but Lodge isn't going to have those problems. It is all about the QA, and that is handled by the company. Lodge isn't going to allow that type of product into their line. I could just as easily point out a bazillion atrocities done by western made products and make blanket statements. The fact is the lodge enameled dutch oven is fine for its price point. It may not last as long (potentially), but it certainly isn't going to make you sick.

Just reading a few links where people are saying Le Creuset enameled pans still leach cadmium like other brands do. This apparently even applies to the two colors that Le Creuset claims are cadmium free. Of course the name of the blog doesn't instill much confidence in her scientific method.

Buy once, cry once. And then you don't have to deal with supporting China either. It's not really a complicated subject, they mass produce stuff cheap because they'll use essentially slave labor and disregard and kind of environmental impact.
