it's also officially obsolete next year if you're on windows. given that everyone's abandoning the hardware affected by spectre, it's reasonable that OSS will follow suit.

That said, yeah, 8th gen is pretty dated. I'm one to recommend business laptops but the difference between 8th gen and 11th is absolutely massive. The 11th has massively better performance and much better battery life too.
I agree spending $300 on a refurbished 8th gen is not recommended but I'm also not going to compare it to the i3 11th gen behemoth.

That thing is half the size of a computer to carry around. If it came in something in a 14" or 15" we could talk about it but at the moment these are apples and oranges just in size alone.

Thanks OP!
Too bad the CPU is 8th gen. Frown
Nice build quality etc., but there are other options for similar prices with 11th gen CPUs, albeit 8GB RAM vs 16GB (but the 8GB is upgradable).

If this had a 10th Gen, or 11th Gen CPU even for $50 more, it would be a perfect deal for an extra laptop (have two premium 32GB laptops already - one for WFH and one for personal use after work and for working from remote locations - but for only $300 I could find some use for a 3rd laptop I think.
Might still be worth considering, but think I will stick to leaning towards the 11th Gen options from competitors (not the Dell premium build quality though).

TBH I do not really need a 3rd laptop (this would be a bit of an impulse buy as noted above).
But there are other options...

Wouldn't make sense - on the internet - to share the URL?

There's a lot of folks here that don't know their tech. So I should clarify.

As far as Intel's ultrabook "U" processors:

The 7th gen was dual core and is pretty inadequate in 2022.

There is nearly no difference in CPU or GPU performance between 8th Release 1 (8250U), 8th Release 2 (8265U), and 10th Gen (10210U) processors. They are 99.9% the same processors with different clock speeds, trading increasing heat for VERY slightly greater performance due to the lack of tech (process) advancements on Intel's part. The 10th gen CPUs are known for running quite hot. 8th-10th gen also had crappy graphics.

The 11th gen is where laptops got a large CPU+GPU boost, especially on the graphics side with Xe.

Unless you are doing something graphic intensive such as gaming, a quad core 8th-10th gen CPU should be more than adequate these days for basic use (web browser, youtube, office applications.

I have a slightly older but very similar machine for work (E7450, with i7-5600U). And I still love it. I am about to upgrade because it has started to overheat when I have ~50 chrome tabs open with large dataset data analysis running in the background and a handful of word/excel documents open while simultaneously zoom calling with video on and outputting to 3 monitors in an unairconditoned office. So yeah, this will handle most people's non-gaming needs with ease. Tempted to pick one up for personal use.

Sturdy but portable. Great build quality.

Why is that? I know Windows 10 support still has a few more years, so how is spectre affecting this?

Picked up the 7390 a couple weeks back from Dell Refurb. Solid machine, looks like new. Will be a great choice at this price point. Would not second guess this one either.

We have about 2000 of these machines in our corporate environment and have been upgrading the heck out of them these pat couple of months. While the physical build quality is of a premium product, so many issues arise that the contracted dell tech would come on site everyday replacing parts. The most common failure on these would have to be the motherboard and trackpad. Often a usb-c port stops.working and the whole motherboard replaced which in turn an audio issue might pop up. These look and feel nice but couldn't stand the vigor for corporate use. Of course your mileage may vary for personal use.

I have a 8th gen HP elite book laptop and is great for general productivity. I think this is a nice deal. Does anyone know if the display is IPS? That would be the only deal breaker.

pretty sweet machine for basics;; ie for kids and web browsing
....This is a latitude 7400. My large corporate still has this deployed as we use a 3 year cycle. Only difference is we use i7s.

Trust me - many people can do many things on these, including web developing with ease.

You can't possibly be serious and knowledgeable if you're comparing a 17" laptop that HP didn't even bother to give a name or an SSD (in 2021) to, to a Latitude 7000 series laptop.

. . . and can be upgraded to Win11 and stay a viable laptop for years. Not sure if the enthusiast crowd is infiltrating the deal-searching crowd, but these laptops are great.

My 7th gen i7 laptop with 16gb ram and SSD is struggling hard in 2022. I'm not sure if I'm comfortable recommending an 8th gen i5 laptop.
Put in NVMe ssd if yours support it. SATA ssd is much slower.
