Excellent price, but the iPad Air 5 is $550 from Apple with educational discount (they don't check) and you get another $100 Apple gift card, which many will value at face value or close to it. At $450, the Air 5 is probably a better buy - it has twice the RAM (8GB vs 4GB), which makes a bigger difference than people realize for performance and iOS support longevity. And the 5 has the M1 processor, which is required for Stage Manager and external display support in iPadOS 16.

I also agree with this. The M1 is where it's at and apple realized that these really need more ram. 2x the ram is huge. It would be a long time until you'd need to upgrade a 5th gen vs this that could start slowing down after about a year due to the ram and everything else being optimized for the M1.

The keyword there is theoretical. The vulnerability requires a memory corruption bug for the exploit. That can be patched with an update, so as long as the iPad is kept updated, it's a non-issue. Not to mention, neither Snapdragon, Samsung, or Apple's A series Arm chips even have this PAC security hardware yet, and you don't here anyone worrying about the vulnerability in those. It's just clickbait material for the news sites. Plus Apple hasn't commented on whether the M2 has fixed the hardware vulnerability in the PAC. The M2 fabs were already finalized before MIT discovered the vulnerability, so it's incredibly unlikely the M2 has fixed it. It would be ridiculously expensive for them to change the fabs afterwards. I'm not an apple fan fanboy (I don't even own any Apple devices, nor do I plan to), but you're spreading misinformation.

I have the M1 iPad Pro and wow what a huge step up from the 2017 10.5" Pro I had. Miles better performance

Good point, apple offering $275 for Air4 trade-in, thinking to buy Air5, netting out $175 after trade-in and $100 GC

Agreed however it comes down to what a person want to use it for. If someone wants to just browse, play some occasional games, A14 is good enough. However if you are looking for a computer replacement and use it for image/video editings and some high end games, you may need m1. I still think M1 in an iPad is an overkill though (just a personal opinion).

This is true and an excellent point, but I still placed an order for the gen 4. You're talking about ~$400 vs ~$600 up front out of pocket after tax which in my opinion is a huge difference. Plus my wife needs a new iPad and only uses it to browse the internet and watch Netflix / YouTube. The older chip and 4GB will be more than sufficient. If you have similar usage, the gen 4 is still a perfectly good option for most people.

I remember when Walmart had the 10.5" for $299 years ago when the 10.5" was still way more iPad than anyone needed. Heck it still is in a lot of ways. I don't think anything will ever beat that deal.

This is a prettier design, sure, but not much faster, does not have a 120hz screen, and only has speakers on one side

The new iPad front cameras are a big downgrade optically, despite the higher megapixel cameras. They are basically fisheye lenses that are software defished vs. the old lenses that are optically rectilinear. We have iPads with both the new and old cameras and the new one smears fine facial details in FaceTime calls, making it look less natural. It's a shame that all of the new iPads come only with the new cameras.

I gave factual information and suggested people skip the M1 generation because of the stigma that will be attached to it like what happened with Intel chip even though there were no actual exploits and it could be handled in software but with performance penalties. That is why I said theoretical and such reactions were not rational but these things happen in consumer psychology. There is no misinformation here unlike your post.

Go troll somewhere else.
The exploit requires physical access to your hardware. Only corporate security really need worry about this. I don't leave my hardware lying around in public places. To your above point, no software fixes possible.
