For anyone looking to build a NAS, I'd recommend buying *used* HGST Ultrastar He8 drives on Amazon. They are 8gb for $106 ($13.25/GB). They come with a 5 year warranty, which beats the warranty on this WD drive by 2 years, and you are getting a legit enterprise level 7,200 rpm beast of a drive. The ones I have gotten came with anywhere from 3-5 years of up time on them already (but only powered off like 15 times), but that's a drop in the bucket for these enterprise drives. People say they are a bit louder than WD Red drives, but I haven't noticed it even though my server is in my living room. At the end of the day, all hard drives are at risk of failure, but a 5 year warranty shows how serious these drives are, especially when WD will only warranty a new drive for 3 years. I don't really see the downside (of course I run my drives in matched/mirrored pairs, so I'm not really afraid of a drive failure either way, but these are a great value).

Where do you see the 5 year warranty listed on these drives?

Edit, nvm - I see it in the description.
Does anyone have any experience getting it replaced with that third party vendor?

These things can be answered by looking at the acoustics spec on the data sheet to compare between models.

I have a USB 3.1 to SATA External Hard Drive Docking Station. Can I use this Hard Drive in my Docking Station for backing up folders and files? (by simply copying them from my laptop's C drive?)? (I'm not familiar with NAS; that's why I'm not sure if this type of hard drive will work.) Thanks in advance for any comments.

Yes. You can use it like any other SATA drive. This is what WD does in their external desktop drives with many of their drives.

The warranty is from the third-party seller. What happens when you need a warranty claim three years from now and they are not in business or refuse to respond to any contact?
