Alright so theres 2 revisions of this router.

The original ones were intel Lantiq, but that platform is dead/unsupported as intel sold off their router hardware division (they still make client chips). Only other manufacturer to use it was TPLINK.

The second gen V2 is the typical BCM6750 + BCM43684 in 5G disabled down to 2x2 mode. (Only way its getting 160mhz support on a 2x2, well besides LantiQ) This platform is identical to routers like the AX58U/GS-AX3000 etc.

If you get a v2, I can't really fault it at $50 bucks. Yeah its only 2x2, but its 1/3 the cost of anything remotely decent on sale in terms of "good" AX hardware. It's not going to beat top end AC or AX routers with 4x4 Radios, but, again, its 50 bucks..

If you happen to get a v1, just return it.. my 2c.

Edit: RAX40 is the main platform and RAX35 is the Walmart specific model without a USB port to clarify. Both were updated to BCM hardware somewhere around Q4 2020/Q1 2021.
I had this. Horrible router. The WiFi drops all the time. Search Google "nighthawk rax35 dropping wifi" and you'll see a bunch of other people having the same issue as I did. And every time Netgear releases a new firmware for this piece of crud, they break something else. I've learned to stay away from routers with BC and Intel chips and look for Qualcomm or Atheros.
Broadcom + AX = No DD-WRT

https://dd-wrt.com/support/other-...-r49467%2F

Also you might want to start swaying away from DD-WRT as their development is getting smaller and smaller each month. If you still want to use WiFi 5, DD-WRT is great. Once you get into WiFi 6, you're going to be very limited on options. Most DD-WRT WiFi 6 support is still very buggy and very beta.

I have an old Orbi setup with 2 satellites and a router (3 AP essentially) in a mesh setup. Its the RBK50 setup so its old. Would this work in a mesh setup as a couple APs?

Based on previous times I've bought Netgear products, it will say v2 on the model number sticker (if it's v1, it may not specify as they did not know there would be another version when they made it). The time I needed to know, there was no indication one way or the other on the packaging or anywhere else. Had to open it and read the actual model number on the sticker, unfortunately

I almost bought this router yesterday until I read those reviews. Did the architecture switch from Intel to Broadcom that Jsz0301 pointed out above fixed this issue?

Any 3rd party options going forward with Wifi 6? How about hardware? Thanks for the heads up!

The only one I would suggest from personal experience is RAX120 v2. It doesnt have the range/speeds as other WiFi 6 routers, but I've seen and had very little problems with them. I believe I read somewhere that Xiaomi makes these for Netgear.

This line of routers (based on RAX40) are absolutely horrible. I have used multiple versions (with updated revisions) and still, they are terrible. Poor signal strength, poor speeds.

It really seems the router manufactures are jumping on board the non-opensource bandwagon. Broadcom first started not working with the open source community and now everyone is primarily buying Broadcom chips for their routers. Even though they (like Netgear) claim they support opensource, they work very little with the opensource developers. It's really baffling because companies like Netgear will stop providing updates for their firmware while the opensource versions keep getting updated. Just another reason to force people to go out and buy a new router.

I can't find any features mentioning mesh option to link multiple routers together.
