1) Yes, it will work in the PS5.
2) Yes, you will need a heatsink which runs about $10-15. I'd recommend just buying the version with the heatsink.
It went cheaper less than an hour later Wink
Western digital's own online shop seems to be price matching this (at least the heatsink version), so if you're like me and like to buy from the manufacturers direct instead of Amazon, that is another option for everyone at the moment. You might even find it a bit more compelling if you have certain plug-ins installed on your browser.

It's overkill for gaming PC. Great if you don't have an SSD already. Data-intensive tasks like video editing and rendering would benefit more.

Says it arrives today. So into a clone and fire it up.

These drives are the best boot drives. Super fast and reliable. For a data drive you could wait for the intel 670P to go on sale for $70.

I purely need an SSD or NVME to use as an external HDD. Any idea if a heatsink will be required if I use an enclosure with an NVME gen 3 or 4? I will occasionally transfer files between my Macbook and this SSD / NVME.

Or should I stick with (fat) SSDs? I currently have a Corsair 512 gb SSD that I use with enclosure and USB 3.1 via USB C adapter and the speed seems very fast to me (I think in the 500 mb/s ballpark). I understand NVMEs are super fast but then I want the keep the setup with a minimum without being worried about overheating.

And oh -- prices for SSDs with 500 mb/s and NVME with 5000 mb/s are very similar and thus is my confusion. Using enclosure / adapter will reduce NVME speeds as well. Having slower speed -- does it prolong the life of the drive I go with?

Any advice is appreciated.

thanks!

Most cases for external M.2 drives do not provide proper ventilation.

I always keep my case open and the m.2 at the 45 degree angle with a portable fan blowing on it.

They do makes cases with a mini fan.

If speed is not an issue I would go with a SSD as external adapters are cheap and work well. Crucial MX, Samsung, and SANDISK!

I back up my system on an external 5TB HD.

Similar prices to OP direct from WD
https://www.westerndigital.com/pr...DS200T1XHE

Potentially cheaper with cashback options (10%) and first time purchase discount with email signup (10%).

I tried that and the email signup 10% discount doesnt stack with the original discount.

OK, it cloned fine.

Did a quick transfer test and it transfered from one 2TB 850 to another 2TB 850 internally at 1GBS-899 MBS. 28GB file

This is in a 3x4 system.

Also no problem with registration on the unit at WD.COM.

Noticed the Samsung deal on another thread but those are out of stock at Samsung.

yall acting like deals like this wont exist again this will keep dropping IMO is better to way for black Friday like someone else said, they're going to release a 850x or something, so this one is going to drop in price more

I have a ps5 and I rarely have any games that need to stay in the system for long, that's because I play story mode games more than online nonsense

How big are PS5 games? Trying to see if I need 2TB or 1TB should be enough?
If you don't mind downloading and installing games and have fast internet without data caps 1TB will probably be fine. I went with a 2TB for my PS5, because I tend to jump from game-to-game often so i'd rather have more games installed.

Here's some of the heaviest games in terms of size:
• Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War (225.3 GB)
• Marvel's Avengers (184.1 GB)
• Gran Turismo 7 (183.2 GB)
• Cyberpunk 2077 (158.7 GB)
