Before Chinese companies entered the arena I remembered it mainly just Linksys, DLink and Netgear for mainstream consumer routers. I've always had issues with my Netgear, but somehow I thought buying a more expensive Netgear would resolve the issue. if I could go back in time I would just tell the 16yo me to get the WRT54G

Then when Buffalo, TP-Link and TrentNet joined the party along with ddwrt, finally things got better

yes and no. I know lots of people who have loved their high end tp link routers and I have had tones of issues with my asus gt ac5300.

Asus constantly updates their firmware, years after release. TP-Link does not. Their routers are filled with security holes/flaws once they stop updating them. This can be confirmed by checking their firmware update history on a model that has been out for several years. For instance check this high end TPlink. You have to expect that when getting a TPLink.

You have to expect that when getting a TPLink.
I mean thats true and fair. update the firmware all they want I still have issues with it frequently. security wise can make a big difference especially if you live in the city, But i also value not having to reboot my router 5 times a week to keep it running.
