Before Chinese companies entered the arena I remembered it mainly just Linksys, DLink and Netgear for mainstream consumer routers. I've always had issues with my Netgear, but somehow I thought buying a more expensive Netgear would resolve the issue. if I could go back in time I would just tell the 16yo me to get the WRT54G

Then when Buffalo, TP-Link and TrentNet joined the party along with ddwrt, finally things got better

With this offer, $17. That is the definition of a slickdeal. [Not in market for a low end router, but if I was. I would jump on this.]
The catch is, you buy their lowest end router with the intention of mesh and decide well now I need a better D-Link router for my main mesh point and you end up spending more money with them.

You have to expect that when getting a TPLink.
Tp-Link also updates their firmware but primarily on their most popular sellers and on those devices where a threat is more than likely. Asus updates their firmware on everything cause they have to legally to stay in business in the USA, after they lost a lawsuit for creating products and having support disappear on them almost as soon as they are made.

That being said I am a Asus fanboy but their prices lately last 3-4 years have been outrageous on their routers.

Going by the reviews, they are tricking you into buying one of these. $5 sounds like a great price but if they can get rid of their excessive inventory of these with you paying for shipping and some, it's a WIN for D-link. Even $0 is not a good deal on a router that is not stable..it's just landfill.

D-link is a much more legit brand than TP-link! They are the very first ones making routers Made In Taiwan (I had a lot of them like 20 years ago) until the ChiCom subsidizing exports and cannibalized the market so we are left with garbage brands like TP-link flooding the market. D-link was the reasonably priced but slightly higher quality brand and the ones I had was more reliable than ASUS (that overheats), Buffalo TP-link I had around the same time. My TP-link LEDs failed (I looked it up and other people had the same problem) and I tossed it and got a Netgear (made in Vietnam now). In earlier times (like 15 years ago), Netgear had a lot of reliability problems, but often it's just crappy firmware. If you load it with open source firmware, the hardware itself is ok. D-link kept the firmware simple and reliable.
